The saga goes on.
The car is still a swine to start anyway took it out revved it to limiter in second then tried in third spanner came on I would say the engine cut out revs came down slowly to 4500 where everything came back. Opcom now says fault code 1220 critical error. The ecu on the pump was overhauled and guaranteed to be working. I am wondering if the crankshaft sensor is now playing up and confusing the ecu in the pump
what does everyone think?

Sounds like you've finally got to the bottom of this starting problem. P1220 is a code associated with the ECM on the Bosch VP44 diesel pump . You say you've had this repaired ? Critical error .... Injection timing?

hi
Thanks for the reply.
The ecu was repaired as was faulty and carries a lifetime guarantee, I have read that the crankshaft sensor can make the pump throw this fault. As its electronic it cannot read the mechanical timing? can it?

Ok let's not get into playing parts darts . Fuel quantity adjustment control - malfunction in the fuel quantity adjuster . If you park car facing down hill does it then make a difference to the starting ?

hi
Pump speed is half engine rpm.
Park downhill and it will not start park uphill does. will start when heater sender out and glows on for 15 seconds runs far better with the sender out.
I have put a switch in I also think an injector is going (miss at 1800rpm and white smoke when cold turn the sender of no smoke no miss)
new starter new battery injector seals spill off pipes cleaned the swirl valves and inlets changed the filter case and filter
white smoke on start-up produces white smoke while turning over retimed and then retimed 10 times interestingly when I had the timing out still ran!
does 40 mpg on average more on a run sits at 70 all day not a miss no smoke

I think you've got to get that injector sorted before doing anything else other wise your going round in circles trying to cure the symptom & not the fault . Still say you shouldn't need that switch to manually put the glow plugs on . My old Dti had worn out glow plugs but always fired as soon as you put the key in wether it was warm , cold , boiling or freezing . Did you check the fuel pressure ?
