Steering rack leaking

I was going to replace both tie rods but when removing the bellow on one side it had steering fluid in it so the seal is nackered. I was thinking of getting a recon unit and having that fitted, £300. Or getting a rack from the breakers (Approx £30) and replacing the seals £30, then replace it myself. Can the rack be removed easily, seen it written that the sub frame needs removed, is this only for the pump. Do you need special tools to replace the seals. Rack is a TWR one.
I have also seen reviews of recon units just being cleaned up and painted, if anyone knows of reputable dealer of recon units with the price around £100 then I may consider a recon.

I got a few prices, ACS rack and return postage total £155, Glasgow power steering rack £174, fitting £120 then you need to get the tracking done separatly £35, Eurocarparts Remy rack £193 after 30% discount off, or Hirsche rack £123 after 30% discount off, plus approx £120 fitting and £35 tracking. These racks are all reconditioned.
They do not replace the tie rods, if they use my rack for another car then both tie rods are knackered, so I would need to check the replacement before it gets fitted. I was told it would take between 3 to 4 hours.
Still don't know what to do.

Every recon'd rack I've ever had, has come with new inner tie rods

From my own experiences i thoroughly recommend ACS & Glasgow power steering , both companies know their steering components inside out ( EPS EHPS HPS Steering Racks etc etc ) . I had my ZF reconditioned pump from ACS & have been bowled over by their knowledge of all things associated with steering on old & very modern motors from all manufacturers.

I think I will just have to go to GPS, they are less than 20 miles away and if there are any problems I can easily go back. I have just replaced my whole suspension, exhaust and brakes, fixed all the trim parts that were missing clips etc and just need to fit the rear brake pipes, so just spent around £700 in the last fortnight, hope this is everything for the next 5 years.
Not as bad as 6 years ago when the auto gearbox went £1900. Still cheaper than a new car.
Thanks for the help.
All the best.
Malky.

Hello M32Guy.
Where did you get yours, I phoned GPS and asked what type they fit and they said they don't fit new ones, just the ones they come with, maybe they don't do the recon and just get them in from somewhere. I did expect new tie rods.

Without new inner tie rods it isn't really reconditioned is it? (n)

You could always try putting some power steering stop leak in the reservoir, I had success using this on an Astra H. It takes a couple of weeks to work, so don't expect an instant seal, but it's worth risking £10 or so to try this before going to the expense of changing the rack.

I have read that stop leak only works on the low pressure side not on the high pressure side where the tie rods attach. I contacted a local garage and got a price of £220 supply, fit, tracking and vat, can't beat that. Going to book it in tomorrow for next week.

Well, it's your choice. Stop leak worked on my son's old Astra H, so I know what I will be trying if I have another leaking rack.

I definetly need the 2 rie rod done, this would be £135 total, for an extra £85 I get a recon rack with new tie rods, tracking and fitting. I have replaced all the suspension, brakes, exhaust, tyres and full service so may as well go the full hog and have the car running like new, keep it for the next 5 years, retire to Benidorm and get a sports scooter.
All the best Malky
