Repairing the rear pillar to door wiring loom

Hello, I was having trouble with one of my rear doors on my Astra not locking properly, and then later going completely dead. I had a look at the wiring loom going out to it as it looks like it's a common problem, and yes, the state of the wires was terrible. You can't see very well in the photo but two were completely broken and most of the others each had nicks in at least three (!) places, so no wonder it didn't work.

I don't mind soldering in some new wires, but does anybody know what actually causes it to happen - would letting the new wires have a little slack (as well as some grease) do anything, or can't it really be helped? Is it worth the money to just spend the 2 x ÂŁ30 to get some replacements from eBay?

GM using cheap brittle plastic that can't stand bending, as Fred say's buy another wiring loom for the back door, don't know if they come in left or right looms though but they have plugs on each end..

Oh ok. That's fine, they ask you to tell them which side it is and whether you've got electric windows. Oh so that's why they break... when I saw that was a common problem I was expecting to maybe find one or two wires damaged slightly... not that mess! If I do go ahead with the eBay ones I'll probably check the other side too and replace both if they need it. Don't fancy finding one of the doors decides not to unlock...

I've had this on both my zafiras. First one I cut the offending wires and soldered in new ones. Second one which was recent I bought the loom off eBay. So much easier plus they are colour matched to your existing wiring so you simply can't go wrong. They are greased inside as well. Wiring colours are different for n/s and o/s and the number of wires depending whether you have electrics/alarm etc hence why you have to state which one you need. Good luck with it, but it is very straightforward.

You got one of those big American style fridges then Fred? Loads of room to keep the sausages in?
My sister has one of those and her door loom went twice - as you say lots of nice sparks to wake you up in the morning!:eek:
