Cold Start ( you can hear the noise )

At normal operating temperature ( what it should sound normally )

 

There’s a pulley chirping away.

 

If it's a rattle, then it'll be your timing chain/tensioner. Common issue on these engines.

I told my problem to my mechanic and he said that flywheel needs to be replaced. And i asked some other guy and he said that timing chain needs to be replaced as soon as possible. So, any ideas?

 

I've listened to it, does not sound like the timing chain to me (I'm not expert though), but I did have a timing chain issue on a previous K with the same engine. I've also had a DMF replaced on a different engine, didn't sound like that either when it failed. Sounds more like a type of squeak, possibly pulley related. I'd take it to an independent diesel specialist for another opinion.

It's no a tear in the diaphragm for breather system is it

 

Edit : I found out that the noise is coming from where the turbo sits. Im not sure but, it might be the brackets that are holdimg the turbo. Or the heat shield of the turbo. Any ideas?

 

Aaand that's the reason of that noise. I learned that some people had this issue too. It's because of turbo's heat shield. There is a little crack, but it makes a lot noise.

 

Sounds like chain to me... This engine is notorius for having on of the chain guids falling apart( good when catched early... Disaster catched when comlletly falls apart...)

Edit: if you are close to 100k do your chain wil save you a lot of "crying" later...

 

Is it an engine out job? Like on the K.

 

Trouble is with this noise , is that it’s present from cold but gone when engine is warm never to return. If it was damaged parts on the timing chain the noise would be constant or worse.
heat expands , cold contracts.

 

I need to come back on this, puting 5w40 will create premature damage in time as was meant and designed on dexos2 5w30... The 5w(w-winter) is affecting cold ussage of engine up to 50celsius not the second number.

 

Update : Our mechanic found out that camshaft gear is causing tot his problem. And he said that we need to change chain and some other parts immediately. So the car is at the mechanics shop and gonna be done in 3 days.

 

After 10 months update : Our mechanic changed timing chain, tensioners and timing chain idler. He especially said that the sound was coming from timing chain idler. He also added that driving it like that would have made a catastrophic damage to the engine. Thanks.

The wife has an astra K with the B16DTH. I'm changing Oil every 8,000 in hope that chain / tensioner will last until we get rid at 140,000.

 

I feel your pain. What age is it? I know there was a revision with 2018 on models inc my 2018 1.4t, to 0w 20 oil. When the chain & tensioner starts to go you'll know about it. My brother had an Astra J with the same engine, managed to cover 96k with it, without any timing chain issues, although his dpf packed up at that mileage. He was using it for short trips though, towards the end, which I'd advised him not to do.

 

Maybe @Valer would be kind enough to advise you which oil it requires? I'd stick with whatevers recommend

 

The recommendation from Vx for the 1.6D is Dexos 2 5w30 up to M/Y 18 and OV 0401547 0w20 M/Y 18 on,specifically if it's a B16DTH the recommendation is dexos 2 right through unless it's a euro 6d emissions spec car,
personally if i had one i would probably use the 0w20 myself regardless of year.
One thing to bear in mind if the chains/gears/guides are wearing and rattling is that they have now introduced a gasket
(part number55515025) to go behind the tensioner (previously no gasket at all)
this has a small hole presumably to limit the amount of oil drainback.

 

Vaux are doing them for free on a recall are they not? As long as your car has a fvsh & has covered less than 100k?
Although I don't think they'll change it unless your engine is rattling. At least the engine does not have to to dropped either to change it. Must be worth changing yourself though, prior to any rattling.

I don't think it's a recall George,it's their usual cop-out "upon customer complaint"
but it may mean engine out if any damage is found
"2. Inspect the timing chain tensioner and the timing chain for damages
Note: Replace worn and damaged parts"

 

I thought vauxhall were replacing this gasket for free if the engine was rattling and the car had under 100k on the clock? With a fvsh up to the age of a 10 year old car. There won't be many cars that fall within that criteria mind.

 

so how does customer complaint work? do I need to have had a full vauxhall service history, which I don't and does the chain need to be rattling or can I just mention about the gasket and get it fitted? even better, how is acess and I'd purchase the gasket and fit it myself if I can get into it easy enough? cheers

I found part number on tensioner gasket - 55515025 , can you confirm that this is correct gasket for latest tensioner .
One more question - is it possible to change only - tensioner + gasket and cam cover without timing chain ?

Hi again, my opel insignia b 1.6 cdti 136 ps now is in opel garage .
They order latest tensioner - 55505562 , but when they check vin of my car they don't see tensioner gasket - 55515025 for it but no problem to order it. You are 100% sure that for latest tensioner - 55505562 must use gasket - 55515025 ?
