Good afternoon guys and girls.

I have a puzzling engine fault i guess you would call it?

2011 Insignia 2.0 160 sri started to run a little under powered and hesitating/ spluttering few days ago , i thought id let it develop a little as no eml or warning lights on.

Steadily got worse on my way home last night and then cut out. Tried to restart and the engine would only turn over very slowly then stop (i thought dam engines seized) called rac and recovered to the garage. No warning lights came on , no battery light before cutting out and no eml, notice the temperature was slightly above normal. Once cooled the car fired back up with clutch pedal pressed in, cut out when releasing the clutch pedal (in neutral) Once recovered to the garage 1am this morning started and drove all be it with a rattle, mechanic rang first thing and said car started and sounded fine this morning while he parked it in the workshop.

Bit of back ground car does lots of long journeys at 70mph and never had a dpf issue, DMF was rattling a little but not
excessing. No smoking from exhaust and turbo appeared to be boosting ok.

Anyone else had similar issues? what would cause an engine to appear seized but then start again? Injector leak into the cylinder?

If I hadn't had that seized type symptoms id be thinking turbo , also noticed a rattle noise on over run , like a bad gearbox/clutch sound.

Thanks in advance, cars in the garage for now but just wondered if anyone had similar symptoms or experiences

I wonder if this is the dreaded start of the worn crankshaft caused by a lowering of the oil pressure has the seal for the oil pick up pipe hardens .
If it is the noise won’t go away & eventually as you increase the rpm the oil pressure light comes on followed by an almighty bang as the engine destroys itself .

Just an update. Looked at the car today and confirm low oil pressure switch off engine came up and engine sounded terrible.

Engine won’t rev out. Is it worst changeing that oil feed pipe or is it too late?

So after some advise? New engine? What’s the fix? Car in decent nic but has 121k on the clock. Cost of a recon engine and fitting? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Ben.

First off you’d need to strip the bottom half back to see how bad the damage is , but if it’s been knocking & the oil pressure warning light is now on then the damage is going to be bad .
A good used engine might be the best route you’d looking around the £2000 area for all the work .

Thanks for the feed back , the rattle seems to be coming from the top of the engine , maybe worn cam shaft now hence the missing bad timing etc. I’m no expert! Do you recon it’s worth swooping out the oil pipe seal . As you say it’s need stripping back.

I was thinking 2k so cars a write off me thinks as it’s probs only wort 3k.

Might go down the sell it spare repairs option and buy another car.

Engines going to need a look at before you can know what’s actually happening inside.

Get it checked, just pre agree a price with garage to strip and check so you know where you are.
If only light damage you might get a rebuild done its not to bad.

Not many places will do the rebuild so don’t expect an enthusiastic response from the mechanic.

If you do get rebuilt it should last a long time with no other issues, but buying another car may bring other problems.

The reason many garages won’t be keen on a rebuild is its time consuming & doesn’t make a garage much money , then factor in a mechanic working on it when he can which leads to the car taking up space in the garage whilst engines being stripped etc & new parts ordered in.

It's down to whether you want to keep the car or not, I doubt I'd spend 2k on a car that's worth 3k either.
Although you could get a price for an engine inspection and go from there. As previously stated.
yeh thats where I'm at , will see exactly what the damage is and take it from there , hopefully worth a grand spare and repairs?

I found a few places that would take complete car for ÂŁ650 non runner

Was a few on eBay selling as spares or repair for £800-1200 but didn’t seem to sell.

I worked out to buy a new motor and scrap old I was looking at ÂŁ3,300 loss writing car off and getting ÂŁ2k replacement. Or ÂŁ2k ish lose if I repaired

Not allowing replacing clutch, which is sensible as pretty much parts not labour as engine will be out

Not a good for reliability of the engine ( this seal that hardens on the oil pick up pipe )
The gaffer won’t buy anymore Insignia for use as a taxi due to 2 major engine failures.
