As the title says,i know this might seem silly but as i am due to pick up a MK5 Astra 5dr SXi on Saturday every bit of help would be grateful,so what i want to know is where is the engine temp gauge? all i remember from last week when i had a look at it at the maindealer was seeing the rev gauge speed gauge and petrol, but didn't notice an engine temp gauge.
It is 2006 registered.
The other thing i wanted to ask was about the suspension, does it have the lowered sports set or not, the brochures seem to conflict them selves,in one it says yes and another it says sports hatch only.
Many thanks.

Astra-H (mk5) doesn't have a temperature gauge, it must save all of 50p.

The ECU monitors the temperature sensor output and puts a warning light on when the temperature goes too high - possibly too late.
Thats a great idea then,so when you see steam or smoke coming from the engine then that is your gauge to say its to hot:eh
Seems saftey comes second to profit.
Hmm think i will need to ask for a decent test drive before i part with my money on Saturday.

I will have to make sure i have a decent test drive before i part with my cash, make sure the first thing that don't happen is the warning light comes on.
Something i noticed when i asked to listen to the engine last week was the coolant fan came on as soon as the ignition was switched on, the engine didn't seem hot when this was done.
I did call the dealership garage where i am buying the car to test it for me,they said the fan wasn't coming on,but then they would say that on the phone.
I think i need to think twice now.

Was the air con switched on at the time?
To be honest i couldn't say for sure.
I know it will have 1 years warranty and the remaining manufacturers warranty,so if there was a problem i could get it checked out,but what i don't want is to be sold a lemon, obvious answer is to get the car mechanically and electrically checked out by the AA or RAC,but there a bit pricey, plus we need the car for Saturday which is when we are supposed to buy it.
I do think common sense is in order really which is to get it looked over, might be a bit pricey to start with but i guess could be a whole cheaper in the long run.

Also could anyone tell me if the SXi has lowered sports suspention or was that changed.

I made the mistake of buying an Astra G with no temp guage. I'm convinced that this caused the headgasket blow. You just can't tell if anything is beginning to go wrong with no gauge. I hope you didn't buy this car greyastra, the more I think about it the more crazy it is. The thing is, if Vauxhall think we can do without a temp gauge what the hell else are they cutting back on. It's a disaster for Vauxhall owners this one... and maybe for Vauxhall too.

I think you mean Astra-H.

Copied from another forum:- "The coolant temperature is still being sensed - by the ECU. The ECU also controls the thermostat.

If there's a fault in the circuit, the ECU warns you.

If there's a coolant temperature problem, the dashboard warning light comes on.

So, instead of an entirely fallible human who might look at the engine temperature gauge every now and again, the system is being monitored many times a second by a device which does not tire and does not get distracted.

It's an excellent design feature, which removes meaningless and distracting clutter from the dashboard, yet provides a clear and stark warning if there's a problem"

my 2004 astra h is missing the temp guage, which resulted in an engine rebuild.

u can get to the temo sensor menu on the radio display

switch the radio on .. hold down the setting button until you hear a bleep ... press BC button to cycle through the 'test' menu options .. you will get to a screen which shows something like LCD temp V (velocity) and T (engine temp)

mines got a temp gauge and the fan seems to come on when its nearing 100 it seems to over heat very fast ( i wouldn't mind but it sounds like a lawn mower when it does) checked all the fluid levels and they are all ok it just keeps coming on if i'm sat in traffic for more than 5 mins. why could this be happening all the time anyone know?

Hi on Friday the 14th June we went to view a 2008 Zafira 1600 this was without having to pay until viewing being sure we were happy all round even though this was won on one of the big auction sites, might i say we own a 04 zafira with a temperature gauge of the old kind, having owned many cars through my driving years i know the importance of knowing where your gauge likes to sit and that if for example the stat sticks a bit longer or a pump problem etc than it should and that the gauge will raise more than norm therefore we can take action and fix before it ruins the car engine, so you can imagine the look on my face when i found none at all, knowing it was electronic my first thought was someone had disconnected the rad stat (what if they had there is no way of telling is there?) so theirs me under the bonnet thinking all looks well, so what next! looking through the users book i decide thats the way this stupid idea is so after around 8-10 mins of a fairly high rev on the engine the fan kicks in and out fairly quick thats enough to reassure me, but how reassuring would this have been seeing it on the dash, i would like to know how hot it gets before there is a warning does anyone know? we wont hang on to this one as long as the last

Ive owned my zafira for a year now and i cant get used to having no gauge, especially after getting stuck on the dreaded M25 recently on the hottest day of the year!!!! And not knowing if the warning lights ETC are working correctly,if i had a visible gauge i could have monitored it myself and done something about it before any overheating problems occured, thankfully i had no problems but i think a bit more of an advance warning is never a bad thing! Im currently trying to find out if it is possible to fit an after market gauge,So any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated ?!

Just out of interest should the coolant/temperature light up when the ignition is on? I've been using a Corsa D for the past couple of weeks, and when all the warning lights light up when the ignition is on the temperature light comes on too, yet on my Astra it doesn't. Is this normal?

As for not having the temperature gauge itself, I was the same at first, but after a month or so of driving round with the 'hidden menu' I've learned that it runs between 80-90 degrees, no matter what the weather, and checking under the bonnet ever week to make sure nothings leaking and the coolant level isn't dropping is enough to reassure me that everything is OK.

Also, having a gauge might not be as reliable as you may think. Before I had the Astra I had an 09 Defender with the 2.4 TDCi engine in it. The temperature gauge in that would rise to halfway up the gauge and stay there, unless it was freezing out and then it'd drop slightly in traffic or when stationary. But if it every overheated the gauge would jump from halfway up the gauge to the red line, then it'd go into limp home mode. Personally I think that's as good as useless, and no different to the Astra H. If the Astra overheats, the light will come on. If the Defender overheated, the gauge would just fly up to the red with no warning.
