2 different noises the knocking feels like anti roll bar links and bushes but there new
The steering knock sounds like tip strut mount but changed both mounts and steering rack
Both shocks and both track rod ends and tie rods and both lower ball joints
It's the knock/clunk when steering going slow that pisses me off

engine mount bud ?? i had bad clunk when the body rocks filled the gear box rubber mount with greese seemed to make it quieter

 

I'm working on the same problem. Both tie rod ends and one lower ball joint replaced, all clearly worn. It was fine for a few days, then gradually the knocking returned. Turns out the other lower ball joint is now also full of slack. Have bought a new, so the quest for silence continuous.

 

Front Subframe mounts.i have replaced wishbones,strut top mounts,drop links,anti roll bar bushes still knocking.spoke to guy today def said its subframe bushes.i have had a vibration for a year and I dare bet that's the problem with vibration in low gears

 

Mine also does this, but I've stopped worrying about it now. A guy I know with a new Vivaro has the same problem, this is on a new van !

Knocking, only when the steering wheel is turned. No vibration at all.

 

Don't rule out a loose battery...had an annoying knock for ages that I couldn't trace.

 

Knocking when turning wheel will be strut top mounts on top of shocks.the bearing seizes inside the mount.

 

Am gonna check my battery as I haven't even thought of that just to rule it out.

 

Mines got a vibration in 2nd,3rd gear what nobody can detect.in comes in at 1800 rpm and out 2000rpm.had it for a year now.replaced God knows what still there.only thing left to do is subframe mounts as a say it knocks over bumps so could well be the cause

 

How about the gearbox bearings mate? i had a transit connect with the same fault, vibration through the floor only in 1st and 2nd gear when pulling away upto 30mph, then went.
box had been re-con'd 20k ago, but the driveshaft had given up and knocked the bearings in the box out slightly.
found it by jacking the van up off the floor both sides together and getting someone to start it up so i could see the diff. got them to put it in 1st and "drive" it upto speed through the gears, ans sure enough i saw the box vibrate and wobble, then settle out at higher speeds.
might be worth a look.

 

sounds to me like the top mount and spring.

i've had my spring dislocate from the top rubber before, so i compressed the spring, lined it all up again, and resettled it.

a few miles down the road, it started to clunk again as i put a fair amount of steering into a junction, island, or parking up, but it hasn't dislocated from the perch this time so doesn't knock under usual bumps.

i think the strut needs to come out and get rebuilt, possibly with new bearing or top mount.

 

Top bearing be shot mate as it's not letting spring compress and rotate when you turn steering

 

Hi all, apologies for jumping in on this thread.. I have a similar 'clunk' when steering, only at slow speed going close to full lock.
Is there an easy way of determining which of the faults it is? Anti-roll bar or top bearing? What should I look for first? Looking through Haynes didn't appear to help much..

Sorry for the numpty questions - I'm used to servicing bikes and am (still) new to van ownership..

Cheers, looks pretty straightforward to replace - would I be right in saying it's not an urgent item until I can feel it when I'm driving normally/in a straight line?
Also a quick online search and replacements come in at around 25 to 35 quid each, does that sound about right?

..new top strut mounts arriving today - but before I started i noticed this (see pic). Is it sticking out this way just a result of the bearing etc being worn or is it a symptom of something worse..? both left and right are the same..

 

a friend of mine had a 06 plate had a knock also his ended up bring drive shaft n/s . just a thought

 

Top mount looks similar to mine when I changed them. Imagine you've done it looking at the date though.

 

Yes, top mount bearings were a mess.. all sorted now. Cheers for responding though.

 

I'm on with same now, had bottom arms , track rods, tie rods , steering rack , all had visible signs of wear so not replaced for no reason , I'm currently in the process of buying shocks due to previous owner lowering it and the shocks have took a beating, so going to repace top mounts and springs to standard at same time ,
if I get a good price on subframe bushes then just going to do it all at same time , oh n replacing timing chain and water pump too , plan on keep it so nowt wasted plus use this van to pull a 1.8 tonne caravan , and incase you are wondering, I'm running 170bhp, that's how it pulls it with 9 people in and luggage , pushing over 4 tonne when all loaded ,
