My mates car has an intermittent frump pump problem...

It's a mark 5 astra and he's got a new pump from europarts and wants me to fit it...

I being told many different things along the line that the ecu will need to be reprogrammed before the new pump will work...

Has anyone done this before and what is the truth?

petrol no diesel possibly. There are 2 diesel systems fitted depending on year. PSG5 pumps have a single connector, fitted to older cars, does not need programming. PSG16 pumps have 2 big connectors, fitted to later models, has to be programmed.
Scratch that, Mk5 or H model will be a cdti engine.

Thanks for that, yeah forgot to mention it was a petrol so should be no problem... Except a few scraped knuckles of course. :)
Funny you should mention replacing a Petrol Fuel pump in an Astra H as I did mine a couple of days ago. Here is what a put in the thread I started regarding my Fuel pump Problems:

"Replacement fuel pump arrived and fitted and all working again. However, On the Astra H its not just a simple job of replacing the pump.....

I got the fuel pipe and electrical connector off then the retaining ring removed with a blunt drift and slight tapping with a hammer. The replacement pump comes as a complete module which includes a pump, filter and float/sender unit. You cannot just replace the pump on its own, the whole module looks like this one in the picture in this eBay item: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fuel-Pump-and-Sender-Unit-for-Opel-Astra-04-09-/300764396178?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model:Astra|Plat_Gen:H&hash=item4606f47a92

The problem is getting the module out of the tank. Its held in the bottom of the tank by 4 lugs that clip into place at the bottom of the tank. According to Vauxhall and the Haynes Manual you need a Vauxhall special tool which consists of 4 strips of metal with slots cut out which you slide down the side of the module and it pushes the lugs out and releases the module. It basically works on the same principle as the metal keys you push in the holes in the car radio which releases it.

Not having these or finding anywhere that sells them it was a bit of brute force, screw drivers, putting my hands into the freezing cold petrol in the tank to pull on the lugs with my fingers and a bit of cursing and swearing that finally released it. Once out its simply a case of lining up the replacement pump and pushing it down until it clicks into place

Put the top cover on and retaining ring then connect fuel pipe and electrical connector. Turn key in ignition and you hear the pump working for a few seconds as it primes the fuel system.

I'm sure that someone knows how to release the 4 lugs easily without the need for the Vauxhall special tool. If anyone does know can they let us know for future reference."

I concur with Fire, once fitted no coding needed and works straight away.
