So I had a garage replace my timing belt as it was about 8 years old and coming up to 60k since it was last changed, plus the water pump and serpentine belt while they were at it. I took the car for a drive a few days later, first time since the work was done, and it had a grinding noise at idle. When the engine warmed up it had a real loud whining noise when accelerating and decelerating. I'm not sure if it's the grinding noise turning into a whine with more revs or if it's separate. When I had a look I noticed that a long plastic piece that holds some cables next to the serpentine belt hadn't been clipped back in at the back of the engine and the front fitting was sheared off, so it was sagging onto the serpentine belt. I clipped it in at the back of the engine to clear the belt but the noise remains when the engine is warm, so it isn't that. The noise is almost certainly coming from the left hand side (when facing) where the serpentine belt pulleys etc are, maybe towards the back too.
I've got them to take the car back and find out what the sound is. I went back today and they basically said I might as well get rid of the car as it isn't worth fixing and that it's something to do with the wastegate/turbo after they had a stethoscope on it. I've always had a constant whistle from the right hand side of the engine when it's warm and I was told by someone else ages ago that it's the wastegate. It's been nothing more than an annoyance in the 4 years I've owned it - literally an audible whistle when I'm idling in traffic when the engine is warm. But the noise after the belt change isn't on that side of the engine and literally started the first drive afterwards.
I may be wrong, but I've got the distinct feeling they fucked the belt change and are bullshitting me to get rid. I was hoping it'd just be a bad bearing, pulley, tensioner or something after they changed both belts and disturbed them. I wasn't expecting to be told it was the turbo and I'd be better off getting rid.
I know it's only based on my description but does this not seem weird?
