I know on earlier cars the red and yelow wires need to be swapped over ... so red to yellow and vice versa

The best option is to use a multi meter to test the wires.
Also some head units don't require the wiring to be changed, I put a Kenwood in changed the wires then had to change them back again.

on my car to get the stereo workin i had to wire it like this...........

u need to wire the red wire (THE ONE THATS BEHIND THE DASH FOR STEREO) to the yellow & red on the back off the stereo, that will give u a live current to the stereo, then simply wire the black wire behind the dash to the black wire on the back of ur stereo and that will ground it (EARTH) it should work nw, it did on myn
