This evening I returned home from the main dealer with a £2100 bill to repair my 59 reg Sri CdTi.

Tuesday evening last week I was driving home and got a warning `engine hot`, true enough the gauge was at full and as I was on a motorway I stopped 100 yds later (engine shut itself off) and towed it to the garage.

They deemed it water pump failure, which moved the timing notches and the solution was a new water pump belts and re tme, this in itself is bad enough but further investigation of valves and a complete strip down shows the camshaft completely snapped and the casing scorned.

Has anyone else had this happen? I have lost all faith in vauxhall and don't even want my car which I loved until this. It's always been serviced at the dealer and is looked after.

I'm appalled that this can happen, beware of the Waterpump and this message if anyone gets it...

I have thought about contacting vauxhall for a contribution but it's out of warranty. Any advice anyone

The £2100 repair is for a new camshaft case, valves , timing, pump etc

Find a nice garage and ask them for a price, there is no reason why you can't get a Camshaft case from a breakers yard and replace yours after putting new cam in it.

That's not s bad price for all that work from a dealer but you could get a cheaper quote from a good independent garage due to lower labour rates . I have heard of this happening before on this engine , a bit like the 1.9 cdti which has water-pump seizure at 40,000 miles without fail , yours seems to have gone the same way . On another note do you know if this is the original cam belt & water pump because if so I'd have had the cam belt & water pump changed 2 years ago for peace of mind .

Had the same on my Insignia SRI. coolant level light, engine overheating, then shut down. Initial obs waterw pump seized and stripped cam belt partially. Garage rang today camshaft snapped. Awaiting further inspection. Could be recon engine. Any ideas on cost of short recon engine anyone????

Was speaking to a vauxhall specialist the other day regarding the oil seal of death and if it goes. He said a recon engine and fitting would be about £2.2k. He said most people don’t bother and just scrap the car

Yeh figured that. I do like my Insignia. Good for towing so £2k + cheaper than 5 or 6 for another car

Can’t blame people , especially if the cost is near to or exceeds value of car.
