Does anyone have much experience with 2011/2012 Vauxhall Vivaro/Renault trafics?

I have a 2012 2.0 cdti sportive

Was down on power terribly , happened very gradually until,it got really noticeable, it was gutless. I’m a ground maintenance contractor and tow a 12x6 Ifor most days with mowers etc on board.
Eventually it threw up a light and check injection system message appeared, my mate put a new OME MAF sensor on it and cured it. This was November 2020

Then a couple of months later at 1500-1800rpms I felt it surging (kanarooing). The revs went from 1800 to 1500 and back again several times with my foot in a constant position on the throttle.

It didn’t do it again for nearly a week.
Then it started to do it a bit more frequently. Once a day or so. Sometimes on a cold engine. Sometimes on a warm engine.

This has been ongoing for at least 2-3 months now.

The issue is getting worse and it happens several times most days. Revving it up stops it but sometimes it’ll come back when the revs drop lower again.

In the last few days I’ve noticed black smoke from the exhaust when under load.

When backing up to the trailer the other morning the engine sounded rattley. I revved it and it blew out black smoke. Then it was fine.

I took it tovery good independent today and it kangarooed through three gears when cold on the way. The guy scanned it. No error codes at all. Nothing lit up on the dash.
On live data he said injector 2 and 4 had slight discrepancies.

Backing up the drive with the trailer on this evening it nearly stalled on me twice. More black smoke.

I was only getting average 23mpg yesterday it’s now climbed to 25 though usually I get 26-27 when towing. (I think dpf was doing a regency though it doesn’t tell you…heard it whilsting while loading from the back at idle and it stank)

It’s been serviced recently. It’s had filters and a diesel treatment.

It only ever has Shell or BP fuel.
Has done 70 k. I’ve owned it from 9k.

I drive it hard to keep the DPF clear though fear this black smoke will be clogging it up quickly.

I think it’s probably the injectors and have booked it in though I’m looking at a 3-4 week wait as the garages are so busy and risk being without the van for a week when it is in with a big ££££bill.

Until it throws up a light on the dash we are none the wiser.

Has anyone had injector issues and what symptoms have they presented?

I have also heard that they only like genuine Siemens VDO MAF sensors?…

Thank you in advance.

Hi Richard and welcome to VxON. :)(y)

In your situation with a 3-4 week wait for a garage, I think I would be buying or borrowing a diagnostic machine to see if any fault codes are stored that may point you in the right direction. Ideally, you'd want vaux diagnostic, but you could try a cheapy Autel of Amazon with next day delivery that might give you a heads up.

Ideas, egr valve in need of clean? Diesel filer, air filter are cheap things to check/replace.

Hi. I’ve contacted a garage who specialise in the vans though I’m waiting to hear back. Could be EGR but it never came up on the snapon diagnostics scanner two days ago. I have a foxwell scanner for our bmw. I’m tempted to get the Vauxhall software installed on it.
I would have thought I’d have a light up by now? Is the EGR simple to clean?

thank you

Richard
