By cutting the wire and splicing do you mean cut the wire completely and reconnect your new socket or exposing the wire and connecting leaving the original in place?
I’m not 100% sure if it will throw a code if you completely remove it, I wouldn’t have thought so but I could be wrong, you could unplug it and see if it has any adverse effects.
It would be okay to splice in and add to it, I would add a fuse to it just to be on the safe side, some may say it’s overkill but prefer to stay on the side of caution!
You could also power it by a piggy back fuse, this gives you a fused connection where you can take a fuse from the fuse box (locate a permanent live or switches live depending on your preference - be aware using a permanent live risks leaving you with a flat battery!)
You then plug the piggyback fuse in with the fuse you have removed and it easily gives you a fused power source, it’s easier to do t than explain it!
