Hi Folks!

I am soon to be selling my trusty old Cavalier 1.8 LS and am looking to buy a Vectra Estate, I am loathe to let my Cavalier go as it, and other Cavs are the only vehicles I have owned over the past few years and I have enjoyed years of hassle free and cheap motoring, the only thing is I need space and the Vectra Estate has it. I curse the fact that the last Cavalier to be made by Vauxhall didnt have an estate version otherwise thats the car I would be buying. The logical progression seems to be to pcik up a Vectra estate, I have checked out the specs and it seems that a turbo diesel model will offer the best in terms of fuel economy while still having a bit of power. Can anyone give me any advice as to what to look out for when buying a Vectra Diesel Estate. Are there any particular faults / warning signs that I need to know about when checking out potential buys, I have a budget of around £1600, plus what I will get for selling my old Cav :)cry: ), I am also wondering would it be best to ring round cars listed in the free ads / autotrader or is eBay a good place? I bought my current Cav on eBay from a guy who lived locally and I got a really good deal - £210 plus 6 months tax and 9 month MOT and that was a year ago, its just had a new MOT done and it sailed through the test requiring absolutely nothing doing to it! I can only hope that a Vectra Diesel Estate will bring me as much joy on the roads as my beloved Cavvy.

cheers!

If you're talking about the Vectra-B (as opposed to the current shape Vectra) then go for a DTi and not a Di. The DTi is 100bhp and the Di is about 80 and they both do the same mpg.

I've had 3 fab cavaliers & 1 fab astra .
I know you're budget is for the old shape vectra (much better looking than the current model) - I've recently got shot of an 04 reg CDTi (120) Vectra estate after 10 months - numerous probs with it , alarm failed, rear tailgate strut failed, amongst others- but most serious of all was a problem with an unresponsive accelerator - which was 'investigated' by dealer ....but no fault ever found. Try taking off at a busy junction to have no power and have a car coming towards you side on - wondering why you've stopped in the middle of the road!!! This happened several times and was most un-nerving!
Fuel consumption wasn't terribly good either (30mpg about town)....and though it had the storage capacity of a wardrobe - it also handled like one!!!
Maybe I was just unlucky - I've chosen a petrol Astra estate instead: fingers crossed.
Good Luck anyway

I would try and get one with some service history - also make sure that the engine management light isnt on and abs as the vectra has a lot of sensors that can be unpridicatable at times.

keep us posted how you get on.

Cheers Lads, i'll be sure to look carefully, by the way would the Astra (the last model) Estate be a better choice or are they both the same in terms of faults etc? And yes to the question about me buying a Vectra-B, I doubt I'd get a new shaped one on my limited budget, I've also been toying with the idea of getting an Astra Van, again the last model Astra so if anyone has any experience of these I'd like to know, several years ago I had a Ford Escort van, a 1.8 diesel (ex-BT) which I loved but it got nicked and that put me off owning vans, but it was great for going camping in / doing the festivals etc. So if anyone has any van details I'd be grateful to hear. thanks again! I love Astra's and until a year ago, I was the proud owner of a MKII with 240k on the clock, most of which I put on it. With that said, it's my humble opinion that the level of engineering on Astra's falls below that of the Vectra's. I'd even say that the same applies comparing Astra with the Cavalier. Ok, at the level I'm talking about, a Vectra is really just a late Cavalier!

My advice is that, after owning a Cavalier, you make sure you test drive both cars before making your decision.
