The key barrel rotates around in the driver's side door handle (2001 Vivaro)

Hello,

I let my friend drive my 2001 Vivaro for a few weeks but forgot to warn him, that the driver's side door lock doesn't open smoothly, sometimes you have turn it to the "lock" direction and then turn it to the "unlock" direction in order to open. So, he called me on the 2nd day that something is wrong with the driver's side lock, the key barrel can be rotated all around and the lock of course won't open. So, this is the background story.

Today I took the door panel off to see if maybe I am lucky and just some linkage rod popped out from somewhere and if I can find it and put it back where it snapped out from I'll be done.

I did find one of the two vertical link rods in a horizontal position and loose, I reinstalled it in the door lock button, but that wasn't the cause of the problem, maybe that was another one, but that is fixed now.

I noticed while I am turning the key in the door lock either left or right, inside the door a vertical linkage would move about a quarter or half an inch up or down, but that is it, if I turn the key further in either direction, nothing else happens.

I am not familiar with the mechanics of the door lock and the key barrel, would someone tell me if I have the door handle with the key barrel out in my hands will the key barrel rotate all around or just maybe 60 degrees in either direction? What supposed to prevent the key barrel from rotating all around, something in the handle-key barrel combo or the lock itself?

What do you guys suggest, what could be the problem?

How do I remove the complete door handle? Does it come out with the door lock (3 bolts on the side) and I can access one, lower nut from inside but I am not sure how I could access the nut on the top, I don't see direct access to it.

I did notice two holes on the inside metal panel of the door covered with black plastic plugs, once I removed them, I could clearly see the nut on the bottom of the handle, but some black plastic stuff covers the view to the upper part of the handle through upper hole. So, what is that black plastic piece there and how do I remove it in order to get access to the upper nut on the handle?

So, are you saying that if the lock barrel rotates all around then the complete handle with the lock barrel has to be replaced but other than that it should be OK? Or is there any other reason for the lock barrel can be rotated around?

If I have to get a handle replacement I don't want to remove the old one before I got the new one because I don't want the car park on the street with no door handles. But if this problem could be fixed by taking some stuff apart, I'll go ahead and do it.

you need to remove the handle to get the barrel out, they are separate so you dont need to replace the handle. not sure what stops the barrel rotating, assuming its the rods that are attached to the back which control the overall movement. if its going round in a circle it could be broken inside. why does your central locking not work on the remote ??

It would be great if the rods i.e. or the door lock mechanism itself would limit the circular movement of the lock barrel in the handle, unfortunately I don't know how to remove the handle since I cannot see straight access to the upper nut inside the door.

This is a 2001 Vivaro and it doesn't have a remotely controlled central lock unfortunately. The ignition key itself has only an immobilizer chip inside but no alarm or central lock buttons. It is true, that if you lock or unlock the driver's side door it also activates the passenger side door lock, I forgot to check whether the passenger side door lock also controls the driver's side one. Especially since yesterday I reattached a 2nd linkage rod to the door knob on the driver's side that must have come loose long time ago.

So, it seems like that if I want to see how the whole enchilada works, I have to remove the door lock, the handle with the lock barrel and the central lock switch since I do have a PDF version of the service manual but it only has some mickey-mouse drawings in it instead of photos.

Well, I started this thread in February but I didn't have time work on this problem until today. I managed to remove the outside door handle from the door but I just cannot figure out how to remove the lock and the inner part of the door handle that also holds the cylinder lock. Of course, I already removed the three torx bolts that hold the lock but since the lock is connected to the cylinder with a linkage I am unable to remove it.

First of all, I cannot see how I can remove the linking rod between the lock and the cylinder, my other dilemma is that even if I already disconnected that linkage, I don't see how I can remove the inner part of the door handle that holds the cylinder as well. There isn't seem to be enough space to remove it, if the sliding rail of the window wouldn't be there, that would solve the problem, I just cannot believe that that sliding rail has to be removed for replacing a cylinder lock.

Can anyone help?
