We changed my starter last weekend I've a 2004 1.9 TDCI with it at the back.

It was pretty much as the was suggested in the top post. We took the front had if the exhaust out, which gave access to the cat. Took that out then the earth plate and wiring to the starter. 2 bolts undone from underneath and the awkward bugger from the top with just the air filter removed and out the way. It took time figuring it out, but the starter was replaced and everything back within 45 minutes. I'm no mechanic, but I reckon I could do it on my own now in a couple of hours.
