Well the torx screw holding the disc to the hub on Astras and Vectras is a T40 size. Can't see the Meriva being a different size. You'll also require a 7mm allen key.

Halfords do a rails with male and female torx, various sizes.
Ive got both cos the zafira seems to use these bolts a fair bit. roughly £15 a piece or cheaper on ebay

Which basically allows you to split the caliper in two. Half the caliper remains on the hub, the other half detaches and you can put somewhere on the floor, and there is enough room then to remove the pads and discs.
But they do need removing to change my disks

Nope, the disc won't come off without removing that carrier - Not enough room (About 1/2 cm not enough!).
Anyways, the torx sockets that Halfords have on the rail are too small only goes to E16 and it looks like I need something slightly bigger (E18 maybe 20).

You didn't originally say you wanted to remove the discs as I think everyone presumed you meant the pads.
My Halfords pro set go upto E20 in spline torx so just nip along to them and pick up an E18 and E20 and just take the one back you don't need.
