Just registered and looking for any help with a problem ive been having with my astra for a long time now. The car is a 1.6 8v astra (X16SZR 1998).
Problem im having is that when the car is idling when it's warmed up, the idle revs fluctuate and there's a sort of "pulsating" felt through the car. Also, when warm, if i put my foot on accelerator and hold it constantly at say 2k, the problem is still there so it's not just when idling as such but thats when its most noticable. There's also a "loss of power" (whatever power this car even has :lmao:) when warm, seems alot more gutless than when the car is cold and takes a while to creep up the speedo. Car judders and kangaroo's a bit at low revs too and the fuel consumption is terrible! £10 (2 gallons) will get me about 35/40 miles which is pretty shocking and costing me a bomb to run! Other things i've noticed is that when i start the car up, it's pretty damn loud, assuming its the camshaft tappets as these havent been replaced but where slightly worn.

Things ive done:
Main engine block has been replaced and cleaned up as the threads for the headbolts where shot
Valves reseated on head (all put in their original location also) and obviously new headgasket and all other gaskets (inlet mani, exhaust mani)
New waterpump
New thermostat
Timing belt and tensioner renewed
EGR Blanked but connected (bought a new unit but didnt blank straight away)
New coolant temp sensor
New Lambda (though its a cheap version from Autovaux, will buy a Bosch one on pay day)
Throttle body has been taken off and cleaned though it was pretty damn clean anyway (all ancillarys taken off too and cleaned, eg. ICV, TPS etc but i didnt seperate the upper and lower parts as the gasket isnt available from vaux it seems? though i does seem oily around where they join)
Car recently serviced (oil, filter etc)
Plugs have no carbon deposits or anything (they're a dry browny colour)
Leads and coilpack have been replaced with new (Spark from coilpack to leads is good but i noticed on a couple of the leads that the spark from them seemed a little weak though no signs of this on the plugs as all are in the same state)

Think that about covers everything!
Any pics of anything else or any more info required please just ask! If you go into my user photo album from the pic below theres a few pics of when i did the engine rebuild.

Pic of the camshaft (dont know if you can tell if the lobes are worn or not from this pic, btw, what is the little nozzle thing on the inlet manifold where the plug next to it connects and goes to the master servo?)

this is my second overhaul btw, first one was because i was burning alot of oil (piston rings where gone and bores where scored) then 2nd one the valve stem seals failed :(
So it hasnt all been done to just try sort this problem though this problem was happening before and after the overhaul

sounds like valve clearances are incorrect
I see no tappets on that engine or have i missed something, they are hydraulic if im not mistaken so no adjustment required, if the engine is noisey/tappy then maybe a lifter or cam is defective, how long after starting does the noise take before it goes, my zaf just started doing it the last few months when started first thing in morning, does not do it once its been started, after starting on idle it takes about 3 seconds and its gone, instant if you rev it slightly, infact it never done it this morning at all, try some wynns lifter cleaner in it and see if that stops the noise,

Hi to me it sounds like EGR valve - there is a vauxhall software update to rectify this fault

Hydraulic lifters yer, takes a while to go tbh, doesnt got straight away, still sounds quite noisey through the rev range, just faster.

EGR is new and blanked, just not shown in that picture. Software update is only for the Z16SE (8v MPI) i think, unless anyone knows any different.

hi
sounds silly but have you used an opcom when running.
friend had a vectra that would not start, then would take it to garage who could not find any codes.then we discovered that if it cleared itself the codes dissapeared. My zaf shows airbag fault when first switched on then after start dissapears.
only a thought

update: noticed that one of the leads was arcing out intermittently so got some new 10mm leads (magnecor sort of spec/standard) and was waiting on them. The day the turn up, i was on way to work (didnt get to fit the leads yet as was too close to work start) and one of the coils on my coil pack went as well! leaving me running in only cylinders 2 and 3 >_< obviously wasnt good pulled over, big puff of white smoke and a trail of petrol from the exhaust... got the car home as it wasnt far luckily.
Got a new coilpack next day and got the leads in and was thinking that would be the end of my idle problems and "power loss" when warm but i was wrong :( Car is running back on all fours again, a little smokey, as to be expected as it clears everything through (currently using Millers fuel addative too) but i still have the rough fluctuating idle... not too sure on the MPG as i havent had it on a good run, what else can be causing this? worn tappets / lifters couldnt cause this could they?

sorry for the long post

Only thing I could suggest is to change the fuel filter. It seems like you have tried everything else. Have you changed the crankshaft sensor?
Have you tried the pedal test where you put your foot hard on the a accelerator and the brake pedals at the same time, then turn the key so the instrument panel lights up. Then count how many times the warning light flashes.....my guess would be crank sensor or something fuel related. Sorry I'm no expert tho.....
