Hi all ! I would really appreciate some advice with a problem on my 60 plate primstar I purchased a couple of days ago.
It's a 2.0 115 dci and has done 161500 miles ( don't laugh) ... it seems ok in 1st 2nd 3rd 4th but 5th and 6th has this annoying whining noise which I believe could be the bearings ? I don't know if this is significant but the clutch bites straight away ?
Thanks in advance for any help 馃憤馃徎 p.s novice here !

Is the whine consistent with engine speed or road speed?

Does it whine only under load, or all the time?

We need load more information to help.

Looks like you're suffering the Vivaro chocolate gearbox syndrome Chris. Solution is a rebuild/recon unit IMHO. Sorry I can't give you more hope than this.

Thanks mate. I'm booking into A1 Clutches in Cannock for a new clutch and gearbox in the next couple of weeks... I'll hopefully start to fall in love with it after that ! Haha.

I've never driven a tvp that didn't whine. It's most likely the bearings but it may not be the end of the world unless there's other symptoms. My 2004 was on its original box at 140k, whining like mad. My 2013 started whining at 45k, now on 85k it is no worse. Local tvp gearbox specialist told me it had a long time left in it even though to me it sounded bad.

My philosophy now is to run em into the ground before a rebuild.

To be honest I'm thinking I'll leave it until I hear it get worse and then I'll fork out the 拢970 馃挬 .....
My next mission is to find someone with a hydraulic press to get the injections out if/when they go so I'm prepared ready haha

Thanks mate, you've given me a little hope/confidence.

This was a quote from Al Clutches in Cannock.. I believe they have other workshops too. This quote was for a clutch, gear box and another part to which I can't remember the name to (soz ) lol I'm a detailer not a mechanic.
I would cry if I had to pay 鈧1500 !

I have the same thing but only makes a noise when your foot is on the throttle, whether the foots lightly down or giving it some beans. Does not make the noise when it's coasting with foot off the throttle

Normally these gearbox faults also whine when you let off power as well and in my experience gets louder when coasting. You can hear it as the vehicle slows down, I think it sounds like a jet coming in to land. If you YouTube noisy gearbox bearings you can hear what I mean.

Not saying it isn't that by the way.. if it's only in 5th and 6th then that does really narrow it down I suppose!

Must admit with the road noise you can鈥檛 hear it much in 5 & 6th although 6 is worse.

Seems quiet in the rest of the gears hopefully mine is not too bad for now then.

That's exactly my situation too... whines under load but goes off when I take my foot off the throttle.
I'm going to wait and see if the noise changes/gets any louder and then I'll put my hand in my pocket haha.
