I have a horrible leather gearknob with a beige insert in my astra at the moment, the numbers are starting to wear off and I would like to replace it with a nice shiny aluminium one

I had a MK5 Escort once, and that was a case of just pulling it off, but this one seems to be an entirely different animal...

It's a lift reverse one,

A friend has told me to hacksaw it off, but that sounds a bit extreme..

How should it come off?

Have you searched the forums.? If its anything like removing a Cavalier one, its quite easy, and involves removing the stick, and putting the stick (knobend) into a jug/container of warm/hot water for a while, which in return helps/eases removal.

A stanley knife and Vice Grips did the jpb for me, Cut away the handle till you can see the plastic insert, then using the vice grips, twist and pull for a while
