fuel pump relay

My Zaffy x reg 1.6 has just started cutting out when i brake coming to a stop even when clutch is pressed, not showing the engine light but did pedal trick test and go:

P0230 Fuel pump secondary circuit high C-07
P0230 Fuel Pump Relay Open Circuit C-07
Although this happens everytime i drive car on the odd occassion it seems to rectify itself, ie not stalling, would i be ok in thinking if i change the relay it could be ok or would there be some other problem causing this.

Haven't had time to put opcom on but i think i got another code which was 1612 (i think) which was immobiliser wrong code sent i think, i had the battery off overnight a couple of days ago as i had a smashed window preventing them driving off if they wished (thieves), then had the negative off as directed in book to replace window, could this have anything to do with it.

Need to get this sorted this week cos im away next week in car,, thanks in advance Dave

i have 2 relays in box and that's it there is another block with nothing in it at the side of number 6 which is the passengers side n number 4 is nearest to drivers side as u look at it from front of car, nothing else in there, don't know if that's right lol, but its been fine so must be, will have to post a photo, thanks Dave

There is no specific way to pull the relays out is there? They seem to be really stuck in lol.

Here are the photos:

Stevek28, any chance of a diagram of your fix, just as a try n see please?

Thanks Dave

Hhhhmmm, had engine light on about 2 hours after posting intial thread and stopped on all time.

Been out in car today and it was the same :(, then after about an hour/hour half it has gone, the engine light is out and no stalling, driving absolutley perfect (without doing anything at all), i'm still thinking relay cos i know they are prone to sticking from time to time and some just need taking out n resting then putting back in (if u a cheap skate, like me), but do u still think ecu could have some sort of intermittent fault Mark? or do u think it was just acting up through me having battery off over night?

Plus, sorry i know round n round, when the car had the problem it was driving ok just when u was coming to a stop, if i leave it alone and do nothing would it do any serious harm? Also anyone know which is the relay for fuel pump from above photo?

Thanks Dave

Without testing I could not say but ive seen more dead ECU's that faulty relays when this code is concerned on the Z14XE/Z16XE/Z16SE engines.

I think your dreaming if you think removing it might fix it. Unfortunately these electronics are not like us. They dont need resting lol.

I suspect that the ECU is not giving a earth to pin 85 of the relay which will cause the coil to de-energise the coil and the fuel pump to stop. If you remove the relay. You can see some numbers on the top/bottom which refer to the pins. If you use a test lamp/multimeter you can test to see if its ground or not. If not then its the ECU. Tests are done with ignition on. This method can sometimes produced incorrect results if you are not quick enough because the ECU cools while your setting the test up and then when you perform the test it appears to indicate a relay fault when infact its a intermittent earth from the ECU that is effected by heat

I think the relay is the one closest to the camera on the right. Ive just had a look in TIS/Autodata and it says that the relay should be on the left 3rd from the front and not the right. Maybe someones had issues before and moved it to make room. I can check on our car but the cars not hear at the minute.

yeah no worries dave, in a quick explanation and for test only you're going to need,

1. A piece of wire long enough to get from a good earth point to the relay (pin 85's wire) not sure on colour, marks 152 might be able to tell more if you're uncertain.

2. An 8mm ring terminal crimped to the wire (fixing purpose) you could at test point just run from battery - to pin 85's wire, but don't leave it like this as its not safe.

let us know how you go on and we'll go from there to make it more permene

Well, just a quick report, been in Scarbrough for week and had no problems at all, wonder if it is a sticky relay after all (touch wood) lol.
