Exhaust fallen off

Exhaust has been sounding louder than usual for a while. The past few days a little bit louder, and then today on the way to a football match, sounded like a fricken boy-racer-mobile. Went to set off and god a few yards down the road, then scrape!!

I dunno if it hasa proper term for it, but the back end of the exhaust had fallen off. Totally rusted. It went in for m.o.t. & service in April & i said anything that needs doing, do it. Comes back with notes on mot saying how it's leaking gasses in numerous places & a tyre will need replacing soon. Garage didn't replace it though :( Said it should last a while longer.

Anyway, '96 (N) Escort 1.6 LX. Dad had a look. It's dark at the mo, but he said it's looking like the whole thing needs replacing.

So, what kind of money am i looking at here? Both parts & labour.

The "back end" (backbox) on my Astra was toast 2 weeks ago..I went to an exhaust fabrication/sales place and picked up the back box for £23.

Fitted it myself. When the mid section goes, some poor sod in a garage can sort that. My exhaust can't have been apart in years by the looks of it. If there were bolts to hold the exhaust to the cat, they've rusted beyond recognition now..!

Front 145/r13 remoulds for mine are about £20-25. I'd say let the exhaust place do your exhaust for you if it's that fooked though. The headache of trying it yourself and having it disintegrate on you rendering it undriveable is a pain.

I really dunno :shake Any easy way of finding out?
Look on your receipt or look under the car the cat on an Escort is in the front pipe so you'll be able to see if the whole lots been replaced or just from the cat back. From the price it would just be from the cat back

I don't get a reciept from the garage. Small garage that my parents have been going to for YEARS. My dad knows the owner quite well & because of this, the fella has fitted me in at times when really he doesn't have a space free & has knocked some prices down in the past etc. He also hasn't given any reciepts ever. Dunno if he does this wit5h every customer or not.

Anyway, had a look under the car. The exhaust seems to have 2 boxes on it, around the middle of the car & then at the back. This is all quite shiny, so, new. Towards the engine part, it connects to a darker pipe which tells me that part hasn't been replaced.
