My Astra (2001, 2.2) hasn't been running right and i've had an ECU warning light, so took it to a garage and the diagnostic computer said it was the EGR valve. they cleaned it out but it's still the same. So i've bought a blanking plate (£5, cheap as chips!) and my friend is going to fit it, but i've read that i'll need to take off the egr valve from the car's ecu. I phoned my local vauxhall repairs and they said they won't do it as it may cause problems. I personally think they're being pansy, so i need to find somewhere that will do it.
Do i just take it to a company that does ECU remaps and get the whole ECU remapped? And does anyone know of any reputable companies that will do it in the wirral/merseyside/cheshire area? And any idea of how much this is? I've read that remapping can cost £250, but i only want the EGR taken off the ecu!

:)

Only certain ECU's have the EGR search section, you could be lucky and be able to have it simply turned off, using an OPCOM or similar tool. I have read that others just leave the EGR connected to the plug, of course this depends on what the original EGR fault was. I think offhand there are 9 or 10 different fault codes for various EGR problems.

Yea i'll ring some other Vaux dealers then and see what they say :) is it only vauxhall that can mess around with the ECU? Or are there specialist garages that can too? My car is from 2001 so my ECU might not even have the EGR search section :(

Paul: is there plenty of space under the bonnet to easily leave the egr plugged in? I'm thinking this is the best option rather than mess around with my ecu settings. Did you just put the blanking plate under the EGR valve? and bolt them ontop of each other? I am a bit clueless to how it all works!

Take off the egr, swop the existing gasket for the blanking plate, bolt the egr back on - very easy.
doesnt work on my engine, my ECU can detect if there are any gases going through the system and if there isnt when there should be then the EML come on, some engines can have this done but some cant, mine is one that cant be done, well thats strictly untrue, i have heard of guys that have used unofficial updates from non VX garages to remove th EGR on a 1.6 16v engine however VX advise against it on this engine,

i personally wouldnt mess about with it, id give VX a ring and see if theres a update available to remove the EGR, if not then block it for testing purposes and replace EGR as soon as possible

My Astra 2000 Wreg 1600cc was misfiring, lumpy, back firing, high revving, uneven tickover all the usual problems these cars get once a few years old, a real pain, l followed brilliant advise on these forums and l bought an egr blanking plate from ebay for £4, l fitted this myself, was very easy following advise on here, it is important to move the egr valve to nearby position in engine compartment, and keep the elecs connected this stops the ecu warning light coming on on dash, l also took off the ldler control valve (icv) and cleaned it as had a problem with uneven tickover, stalling and high revving etc, once both the jobs had been done l started car up and the difference was unbelievable, car is back to normal, runs like new, all the problems have gone, after having had this problem for 18 months its a pleasure to take car out now, it runs perfect.
Dont bother with expensive garage costs, it cost me blanking plate £4 and l had to buy a torx 45 bit to take off egr valve £3.. £7 in all, it was so easy, you can do it, l am no mechanic. ps Vauxhall actually supply blanking plates and they do fit them.
