My father-in-law as a mrk5 escort. He just came round and and said when he reverses and push`s the brake, it stops as if he hit a post or something { best way to explain i think}. I took it to a empty carpark near me and tried it, Braking going forward it was fine, stops like a car should { nice and easy lol} put her in reverse, pulled foot off clutch and a clunking type sound like metal on metal. Reversed abot 10 or so feet and put on the brake and BAM, i knew i had`nt hit anything as the nearest thing behind me was about 500 yards but it stopped and felt like i hit something.

The car was serviced about 2 month ago and had lower arms, belts, brakes all round, drop links done and there were no other problems found at all the father in law drives as safe as they come { sunday driver so to speak :) }.

Apart from that, the car drives as sweet as a nut, so it`s stumped me.

Any idea chaps

we had an escort come into work with this problem & i could find nothing wrong other than on the rear shoes the edges were`nt chamfered , this led to the problem you describe & so we filed a chamfer on the leading edges & rear edges & its been fine since.

Thats why i`m thinking brakes, as it`s coming from the front. Although they were new on it`s service so i`m really at a lose. Just been out to the same carpark and got the in-law to reverse and push the foot brake at the place were i was stood and outa 4 goes , it did the same stop twice, othe 2 times were fine. Think i`m going to have to get the car off the ground and have a really good look.

Any other ideas just so i dont overlook something
