On my 1991 1.4 the strut bearing is cone shaped. I have stupidly lost my removal notes. Should the larger face sit against the underside of the top mounting where it seems "happy" but this leaves the open end pointing downhill. How does this work anyway? With the damper shaft held by the upper nut in the car body so that the strut rotates around the shaft why doesn't the upper spring seat wear where it rests on the damper shelf? with such pressure from the spring and the grip from the top nut?
