first thing to check, as people have mentioned, is whether the transponder chip is present inside the key fob, this is a small blackish rectangular bit about 2mm thick and 4mm x 6mm long, they fall out because they are not clipped in if the key fob has been taken apart or dropped and split apart, if that is there check the transducer behind the steering cowl net, remove the cowl and attatched to the lock/ barrel will be a black collar, check the connections at the multiplug by taking it apart and reclipping it. if all there is ok have a look where it is parked, is there a whopping great ariel (tv mast ect) nearby that could be corrupting any signals? if so move it away.
99% of cars with this problem is becuase the chip is missing from the key
good luck
