Hi everyone,

I have a 1998 5 door Astra and the tailgate won't open, it appears to lock and unlock, but thats all, it was fine up until yesterday and since then it just won't open!

Anyone have any ideas how to open it and especially whether there is a manual way to release the mechanism from inside the car?

It's a real bugger having to get things out my boot by crawling through the back seats!

Cheers people!

I take it you're refering to it not unlocking via the central locking?

If it's the same as my Dad's 51 reg, there is a flimsy plastic clip that holds the rod from the solenoid to the lock mechanism. The flimsy plastic clip breaks and the rod becomes detached from the lock.

You can manually open it with the key until you replace the clip. You need to turn the key as far as you can to the right, and press the button in.

You need to remove the carpet trim by unscrewing the torx screws, so as to access the clip, etc.

Cheers Dave,

I try to turn the key but it wont go very far to the right, so I dunno what else to do, I'll probably give Vauxhall a ring tomorrow and see what they say and how much they want to charge me for it

Thanks again!

You might have more luck with an independant vauxhall specialist TBH

I've just climbed into the boot of my '97 Astra3 to have a ponder about this. If you use a screwdriver on the catch in the bootlid GENTLY, you can flick it back to a "loose latch" position that allows you to raise the lid a centimetre or so.

If you had patience, you could then undo the bottom 2 "star" bolts and all the trim panel ones you can access from inside the boot (you can get at these by getting under the parcel shelf with the seats down), and get the trim panel removed.

I'm assuming that would expose the lock assembly and you could then undo it by hand to open the lid and check it.

However, me diddling in the boot has lead to me uncovering a prob with "why does my Astra smell of petrol sometimes".. So, time to ask for help for me!

Cheers everyone, krowlands, i would try it but i have no patience and would end up buggering the whole locking mechanism after about a minute but thanks a lot for having a look at yours for me, i might get me dad to have a look-see and a go, but i doubt he'll do it either, he has no patience either.

scotty, are the official Vx dealers a rip then?
