Hi,

I'm new to the forum and just got Astra 1.6 16v SRi 2011 with 28000miles. I have an issue with fuel consumption. I'm getting around 24mpg or up to 28-29mpg when driving city+motorways, while combined should be around 44mpg. I'm trying to drive fuel efficiently so it probably isn't my driving style. Is this what I should expect? I'm going to have a health check done this Friday but guys at garage seem to be skeptical - they're suggesting I have heavy foot and 1.6 is a big engine...

You would never acheived the official figures.
I averaged 38mpg mixed/comnined driving, when I owned my previous Astra J 1.6sri. That wasn't driving heavy footed. Over around 6k. Was getting around 30mpg town only.
If your doing a lot of constant short journeys from cold then that would drastically reduce your mpg.
The 1.6 engine is not a big engine, comparable to the weight of the J. Its not actually powerful enough, in my opinion.
May be worth changing the plugs & a new air filter.

I'm getting 36 out my 1.8 so you should be getting something similar. 1.6 is not a big engine. Are you going by the trip conputer or have you calculated how many litres your putting in at the pump and how many miles there is between fill ups?

24mpg is what the trip computer shows. I've just done 2 fill ups so far - first was 10 litres/62miles and second 12l/62miles when driving in rush hour.

Is that in continuous heavy traffic?
No, I don't usually drive in heavy traffic, maybe 20% of my overall driving, plus I'm not driving motorways too often but I do drive expressway almost every day (30% of my driving).

I'd be expecting to get mid 30's at least.
How many miles are you getting per full tank?

40mph - around 30/40mpg
50-60mph - around 50mpg

- according to the trip computer 290-300 miles. In reality around 260 on full tank.
That sounds about normal, due to the inaccuracy of your fuel comp. Mines usually around 5%.
I was getting around 400 miles per tank from my prev Astra J 1.6sri, about the same from my 1.4t.
