Just had my MOT and the garage advised me that the front exhaust was corroding and has some small holes (pinpricks, was the expression). However, replacing this apparently involves replacing the cat too, and this sounds like a very expensive job.

Anyone got experience with this kind of problem ? It is "patchable" and/or can it be done without the expense of replacing the cat ?

Thanks all,

I have similar on my V6 SRi, my local mech has said it's just the heat sheild that's rusting. Not sure how true this is but he reckons the exhaust is fine even though it looks shite at first glance

Thanks folks. Called the garage (and I note that they are not trying to make a buck on this, they are hesitant to get involved in this "big" job) and the guy said that there was a clear noise and also that the mechanic doing the MoT said it was blowing in small pin prick like holes. He will personally check again when the car goes in for it's full service in April.
