Having just bought a 53 plate Diesel Astra in December, i was pretty miffed to break down in the Januray. . Anyway , RAC turned up , looked at the engine and suggested Head Gasket as there was oil water mix in rad bottle, I got a lift back to garage and they've been fixing it.

I had a phone call from garage today and they said it wasn't the head gasket but the oil cooler, which they are fixing and i should be able to pick the car up tomorrow. Now my question is , is this a viable fault , or am i just being fobbed off with a quick fix until the warranty runs out ? Any suggestions as to things to look for ? Does it sound like it could be the oil cooler ?

Yes it does sound perfectly viable. A simple pressure and/or sniff test would confirm your headgasket hadn't gone.

If it's a diesel engine then it is most likely to be the oil cooler.. H.G. is a rarity on the dti engines.
