electric power steering

Hi, My brother has a 1.8 Sri Astra H and the past few days the power steering has gone heavy (pump seems to be running for a couple of minutes after the engine is off) In addition the battery keeps losing its charge and noticed past 24hrs once charged up again the alarm goes off. No warning...

so I've damaged my steering rack after an argument with a 4x4 in some snow the other day... Apparently there's 3 different types? I've got an Astra 2001 Y reg 2.2 coupe.. Can anyone tell me what version I need? All I know is it's an electric power steering pump hidden way down near exhaust...
