    Default Reckon it's worth it??

Been offered an Astra F this morning.. R reg, 3 previous owners, Tax & MoT, a little light scabbing round the rear arches, 5-door, 5 good wheels and tyres, in gold (not my favourite colour but Vx gold ain't that bad to be fair).. was a 1.4 16V but the engine (and possibly g/box) is supposedly fubar....

    £150.

No. Maybe a ton, but £150 is a bit much, I reckon.

Really?? Didn't quite see it that way..

It'd scrap at about £110 as it is but... with the Tax'n'test and bearing in mind an engine is (apparently) about £100... for £250 (ish), we got a car that is currently selling for £500+

Been a long time since I've thought about owt like this, mebbe I'm all outta touch an' stuff

I think that the problem is that the engine and box are knackered. A replacement engine and box will cost the same again and then there's the fitting etc etc. It's worth it if you buy it to break, though.

Big businesses do 3 scenarios. Best Case. Worst case and Most likely case.

    Worst Case.
    Car £150
    Engine and Gearbox £200
    Other items £50
    Advertising £50
    Short Term insurance £50
    Selling Price £450 (Is the F a mk3?)
    Labour Time 25 hours
= Loss of £2 for every hour worked on it (about the same as time spent in the pub)

    Best Case.
    Car £120
    Engine and Gearbox £100
    Other items £10
    Advertising £20
    Short Term insurance £0
    Selling Price £550 (Is the F a mk3?)
    Labour Time 15 hours
= Profit of £20 for every hour worked on it.

IMVHO it's ONLY worth it if you are good at haggling hard.

Not really worried about labour hours (she'll do it), insurance (it'll sit on the front garden 'til she's ready) or advertising (she wants a (cheap/runabout) car to use).. and I'm going on putting a 1.4 back in when what she'll really want to do is 2.0 8V..

The 'F' is a mk3, yup.. and they are currently advertised for up to a grand (although I do realise that is incredibly optimistic)..

Doubt it'll go less than £150 tbh.. he'll soak the interior, fill the fuel tank with oil and get that for it without the wheels/tyres. . . .

Decisions, decisions (ultimately, though, it's her cash not mine - I just knew I'd get a balanced/sensible response here....)

Talked it over with her, she's done engine swaps before so isn't fussed about time/labour and she's gonna buy it..

    Thanks for the input chaps
