blocking off egr valve

I wanted to block of the egr valve in order to get a better throttle response. In threads posted previously it states to place a steel from a can to cap off the valve. Will a coca cola can do or does it need to be of a particular metal, ie steel or aluminium.

blocked off egr valve by using a drinks can and car drives alot smoother. Much, much better throttle response. Anyone else got the same and also would i get problems in the future by doing the above.

Got an X Reg Zafira 1.6 ecotec. Usual problems - stuttering acceleration etc. Hartwell Vauxhall in Southampton advised they would definitely NOT use a blank - no way. Would have to investigate and it may be lots of things. I suggested the EGR and in my opinion the Hartwell man gave me the impression that this was entirely new to him. Took it to PICADOR Vauxhall who told me that Vauxhall advice was to change software and blank off the valve which they did for just £45 !!! (excluding the diagnostic which I had already had done). Car runs great now. Interesting difference in the 2 dealerships ?

I am surprise VX offered to blank off your EGR valve, in my opinion this is the best sulotion... however VX normnally wont do that... normally they will ask for £75 for a new EGR valve. Then after 30k miles your EGR valve will failed again and they will want to replace it again to sqeeze more money off you.....

Please let me know whether you have improve fuel economy after the EGR valve was blanked.

How much of this applies to an 02 GSi Turbo? Throttle response, although OK, is not very smooth through the range. This is on top of the normal turbo type responses.

No sure about turbo Astra has EGR valve... hows your turbo lag? at what speed your throttle was surging?

It's actually a Zafira GSi turbo. Turbo lag is not too big an issue, it's more the surging in the throttle response which is present in the mid range - 2,000 rpm up. It's just not linear and you have to use the throttle quite delicately to get smooth progress.

EGR offers lower diffusion flame temp which lower NOx emission... MOT only check CO, CO2, HC and smoke. However, if OBD light is on, I am not sure whether this is a fail test or not...

Hi, stuttering acceleration thats me. Had a dianostic done on my 1.6 corsa v reg, @ vauxhall garage, said £260.00 for new erg valve. WHAT???? Thats not even labor.So a mate had a look, can't see nothing wrong with it tho!!! Found one on the net for £60 new, think i'll go for that and hope for the best........

Just replaced the EGR valve on my X18XE1 - £55 incl vat & delivery - takes about 15 mins to replace.

On 1.6 engines with MAP sensor, the ECU has to be programmed to disable EGR, using Tech 2, any Vauxhall dealer should be able to do it. Just blanking with a gasket will bring up a fault code.

On 1.8 (&2.0?) engines with MAF, a simple blanking gasket can be used.

i had my egr valve replaced then 7000 miles later was faulty again! car was re-called to vauxhall, egr valve blanked off with a new gasket then de-activated from the ecu, goes perfect now.

I used an aluminium Foster's can - just remove the EGR valve, use the old gasket as a template to cut a new one out of the aluminium. Just cut one hole where the mechanism goes through, leaving the other one blank. Reassemble using both the original gasket and the new aluminium one.

Certain models can have the EGR disabled from the ECU, using Tech 2, but not all.
