Sorry, newbie here, and first post is a question.

I've got a 56 plate Zafira Life 1.6 petrol - and get a rattle/clatter on cold starts (and only cold starts) when I move the car. After a few seconds (30 or so), the sound stops. There's an audio clip at http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~agauton/zafclank.mp3 - the clip goes from me starting the car, reversing, then 1st gear and driving off.

My local(ish) dealer have suggested a damaged piston ring, but want 300 quid to investigate further, to decide if it is that, and if it is are suggesting around 3000 quid in parts. Now that seems a bit ott to me, so was looking to see if anyone has any other suggestions.

    Thanks.

hi, now i have listened to the sound it sounds more like a loose/broken bracket somewhere, in the old day's i would have said the fan catching the radiator, that's what it sounds like.

Someone in the office suggested the radiator fan, but surely that would keep going afterwards?

The thing that annoys me is that it only happens from cold, and then stops within a minute of starting the engine - which is gonna make it difficult to diagnose.

Someone else also wondered if maybe it was a slight slippage in the timing belt?

if it was slippage in the timing belt you would know about it, the car would be dead by now, it is a very strange sound, sounds almost serious but if its only doing it on start up and for 30 seconds from cold then maybe its not that serious,

Could just be a lazy hydraulic tappet taking a few seconds to prime with oil when stone cold. These engines really need 5W/30 fully synthetic oil up to GM Longlife specification: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GM-5W-30-...=180507544457&ps=63&clkid=2407670419147407899 When was oil and filter last changed and is oil spec correct? Is oil level up to the max on dipstick? You could try a bottle of Forte Top End treatment if service history is a bit patchy: http://www.a1-motorstores.com/store_main.asp?int_product_id=3984

funny you should mention hydraulic lifters, this was my first thought but listening to the sound clip it sounds more than lifters, but its hard to diagnose by listening to a computer, my car sounded tappy when first starting of a morning and only from cold but it only lasted around 2-4 seconds and the sound went, this was obviously hydraulic lifters, i ran wynns hydraulic lifter cleaner for a bit which didnt seem to solve the problem, then i changed the oil and filter and that solved it, the oil had done 7k when it started tapping, hard to say if the treatment done any good with my car but it gets some good write ups, car has done a further 6k without any issues

The noise started about 3 weeks ago - we bought the car 19 months or so ago, had it serviced last September, and again last week. Oil levels were fine too.

The dealer suggested waiting a week for diagnosis on the engine, as there was something else dealt with by warranty, so they wanted to split any warranty claims.

Both services were done at a Vauxhall dealer. And it's certainly a bit quieter after the service.

Had a listen again when I came home from work, and the noise seems to come from the top end of the engine, under the cover.

And the answer - according to the garage - all 4 piston rings seized.

Result, a remanufactured engine supplied and fitted under warranty.
