hi everyone im dave 1st time poster but ive read a lot of thread these last couple of days LOL

seems i have a very annoying common fault

ok lets start with letting you know what car i have

vauxhall zafira elegance 2.0 dti 52 plate engine 17D19436

had the car nearly 5 years now from 45k miles and it has 80k on it now... maintained well and serviced every year full service history
around a year ago the car jolted and went into what i now now to be limp mode, almost as quick as it did it, it came back out to normal drive, i mentioned it to the misses to keep an eye when she is driving it but it never ever did it again until now!

a few weeks ago while in neutral idle at the traffic lights after a 5-10 min drive the car jolts the pedal sort of vibrated under foot and the car went into limp, 2 lights come on the engine management lightand the coolant lights are on while the problem occurs, the rev counter goes to zero sometimesi have been able to rev it up there is no restriction like on some owners cars ive read, mine will rev up fine and it can solve the issue... 1 time it was stuck in limp mode same lights on rev counter on zero and it would not clear but mostly it does
while in limp mode i dont have too much power loss and as before unlike some other owners the car is notspeed limited or does not seem to be, its obviously very sluggish and slower to pick up but ive managed to drive home in this mode now many times 30 40 50 mile per hour on different occasions

started my research on here and other sites with zafira issues and as they seemed very simular to start i started to illiminunate what i hoped would be the easy fix 1st options, started with themass air flow meter, changed that, drove it aorund 10 min into the drive it bumped into limp mode... more research... i start lookingtoward the egr valve... i get that out and its coked up to hell... black soot caked onto it so i set about cleaing that down still got the black hands to prove it lol... im no mechanic and i dont even know if the thing is operational but ive cleaned it and put it back in, test drive yep you guess correct, into limp home mode we go

ok... i call a mate who knows a mate who is a mechanic, he comes out with a code reader... we go for a drive and for the 1st 5 to 10 mins its normal... nothing wrong with this he says then bump its limp mode heaven, no rev counter 2 lights on but driving ok at 30 sluggish and bit jerky when changing down but no major power loss .... oh forgot to mention while in neutral the engine revs up and down but the rev counter does not move... the speedo does work fine but in neutral the car idle goes up and down up and down until i either put a little bit of peddle on or pull off in gear

anyways we are back at the house in limp mode and dude puts his code reader on... no codes stored ? tries a few times and nothing
he gets on the phone to a mate in vx and the guy says the code reader you are using may not show any codes it need to be looked at by vx and diagnosed with a proper code reader ?

so without getting it on another code reader.. is there anything i can do myself to check out or look over ?

so sorry at this time no codes to offer and only the symptoms to go on

its such a shame the car has been my rock for 4+ years and only now has it decided to play up, im not moaning as such but id like to get to the bottom of it to put it rightso i can happily motor on for another 4 years +

im sorry for the long drawn out explanation but its the only way :)

any help tips and advice very much appriciated

heh, it need a proper code reader. Find somebody with an op-com near you and chuck them a couple of quid. Or invest in one yourself (helps to have a laptop you can sit in the car with you), best 30 quid you'll ever spend.
