Its a 1.8 16v with an x18xe1 engine. Symptons are fluctuating revs when slowing down at about 1500rpm, you can actually see the rev counter moving up and down by about 100rpms either way. Also found that reving and holding the engine steady at about 1700rpm the engine will wonder up and down on its own.
It idles fine and steady, never stalls, cruises fine but does seem to lack a bit of performance. Top speed is really no more that 110mph.
    Parts that have been changed so far;
EGR valve, coil pack, plugs, Maf Sensor, fuel filter, air filter. Full throttle body and inlet manifold cleanout. Checked all pipes for cracks etc.
Fuel economy is average. The only thing left to do that I know of is the flexible exhaust joint which is blowing a very small amount.

    Hi,

I also have a 2002 Zafira 1.8CD. Sometimes when I come to a stop the revs will fluctuate between about 600 to a 1000. sometimes a prod on the accelerator brings it right but not all the time. The engine management light/sevice light (the light with a car and a spanner) also comes on sometimes. the car will also rev high for a second or two when depressing the clutch and I take my foot off the accelerator.

Does anyone have any ideas to resolve this??

    Thanks for the informative sites

if you have the engine light on there should be a fault logged. best way is to find out to code - could save you alot of time and money buying the wrong bits maybe.
Could be your crank or cam sensor at a guess

Hi for the second poster if the idle is fluctuating then it could be the idle control valve clogged up or the EGR which would illuminate the Emissions light try cleaning both items and fit a new genuine set of plugs
    But
For the first poster if its not fluctuating at idle but a higher revs i have a question why would you rev the engine with no load on it a try to hold it steady at 1500rpm??
However if the engine is under load then the revs shouldn't fluctuate as the gearbox and road train won't let it i wonder if your rev pick up is faulty this would have an effect on the engine as the ecu gets the rpm from it to manage the engine systems this could also effect top end and economy
    regards
    Steve

hi something like the extra connection on the alternator or from the cam/crank sensor i'm not sure where yours gets the rev counter feed from can you actually hear the engine surging or are you relying on the rev counter
    regards

hi, hear it, feel it and see it on the rev counter. esp when slowing down and running on the engine idle, like when you let the gears slow the car down, starts jerking and you see the revs going up and down

Had this problem on my Sintra I know it's a different engine I changed the idle control valve (ICV) and it cured it. It was an absolute pig to drive in traffic!
