my 2002 zafira is making wheel bearing noise. I live in switzerland so the language is a problem when trying to get any genuine information. we are about to go on holiday so will be driving alot. The noise that they are making is not loud at all and doesnt overly bother me, but the big question is ...CAN THESE THINGS SEIZE. I'm lead to believe that it is a closed hub, so therefore it is prepacked with greece when originally manufactured, so if the greese cant get out why should the thing ever seize???

If i do have to replace the whole unit would anyone know where is a good place to source this in Switzerland, if i go thru a dealer they say that the part alone (one side only) is a round 550 francs.

thank you very much in advance

    regards dex

i had the same problem with my front wheel bearings on my zafira, ive never known a wheel bearing seize, they usually just get louder which usually starts with a humming and then goes to a rumbling, not sure were you would get one in switzerland but i got mine off ebay for £43 delivered, yes they are a 1 peice unit and cannot be re-greased - its sealed

the front wheel bearings come as a complete inner hub with bearing, your mechanic is talking rubbish, the only special tools required are a set of male/female torx sockets, the inner hub is held on by 3 x felmale E18 hub bolts, your disc may be held on with a male torx bolt, mine was a 5mm alen head bolt,

it does not come with a cv joint, you said it was your wheel bearing making the noise, you do not have to touch the cv joint, the procedure is basically, remove wheel, remove drivehaft nut cap, remove pin and loosen driveshaft nut (may be easier with wheel on car and car on ground 30mm nut), remove 1 bolt that holds brake disc on, remove caliper with 2 x bolts at back of the carrier and tie out the way, remove brake disc , unplug any sensors, remove 2 bolts holding outer hub bracet to the strut and let it move foward while pushing the driveshaft out of the inner hub, then this makes access to the 3 x E18 bolts easy, just undo the bolts and tap the inner hub/bearing out, fit the new one and do everything in reverse, takes about 45 minutes from start to finish

before going to the expense of a new bearing have you checked the tyres? tyres can cause a noise similar to bearing noise but dont get louder when under load like going around corners

when mine was rumbling, i got the car on a quiet road and got it making the noise then steered left then right and i listened for a change in tone, when i steered right it was loud but on steering left it went quiet, this pointed to left hand wheel bearing, i changed this and its nice and quiet now
