I need to change the oil in my 53 plate corsa 1.2 59,000 miles but in the vauxhall manual it says use 5w-30 so i phoned vauxhall to see what the price was for the oil and i was told by bloke on the parts counter that he would put 10w-40 in :think so he gave me the price of the oil and he said it was a bit expensive and he would use a different brand. So now i have been using castrol magnatec 10w-40 but as i'm thinking of doing a oil change i was wondering what would the best oil to use.

Doesn't the 1.2 in this model use a timing chain that has to be constantly lubricated? I personally would stick to the thinner grade oil in the manual BUT it would probably run fine on 10-40 semi synth.

upto 2003 model year 10w40,2004 model year on 5w30 longlife oil, your 53 reg car could be either, the chassis number would confirm the model year

Thanks solorider for your reply. When i had my car serviced at vauxhall in the service book they ticked the box oil grade ACEA-A3/B3 but on 2 different service receipt that i found it showed one where they used mobil oil and the other where they used 93165213. So i was wondering if you would know what the 93165213 is so i can use the same oil. On the service receipt it had reg date 30 nov 2003.

I wouldn't worry too much about the exact type and matching it. So long as it is ACEA A3/B3 semi synthetic it will be fine, 10/40 or 5/30. You would be ok with Halfords own brand 5 litre 10/40 semi synthetic for £16 which meets these requirements, and is cheaper than Magnatec or their own 5/30 if you prefer. I think Vauxhall main dealer oil isn't much more, certainly for under£20 you can get decent oil that if changed every 6 months will make sure you engine lasts a long time, especially on your Corsa with a timing chain that needs good oil changed regularly.
