first thing to do would be to meter the holder, are you getting any voltage when the indicators on?
try taking the cluster out and checking the wiring, tow bar electrics are spliced into one of the light clusters so if your has/has had one then could be that.

    rear sidelight isn't working either.

what should i be checking on the holder? Basically 2 probes onto 2 points of bulb holder and look for a voltage then?

when you say towbar electrics are spliced into one of the holders should i be looking for anything here at all?

also if getting no voltage what you reckon the problem is?

Yes, just check for voltage at the bulb contacts, if none present then you just gotta work your way back through the connectors on the rear cluster and wiring...
I'd start at the tow bar and find the point where the wiring splices into the van loom and check there for any damage. Also an idea to check all the fuses before you get too involved.

i guess the connectors have 2 wires to tail light and 2 for indicator?

what fuses are for the rear cluster? also would the fuse not be for all the rear clusters and not just one of them?

    any diagrams for fusebox?

just been out at van and opened fusebox and going with the diagram on the plastic lid i changed all the red 10 amp fuses one at a time which referred to the lights and nothing changed.

all your indicators are one one fuse so its not a fuse broblem. i would say its a problem at the rear light cluster, have you had it out?

check it all over damage, check the plug and check the wiring as far back as you can. if you have a towbar and the wires have been spliced into on that side then check them.

no towbar so no wires should be spliced. I will change bulb holder from one rear light and try it on the other.

failing that i'm stuck i feel

If the rear indicator and rear side light dont work on the driver side of the van check the brake light and rear fog light on that side as well, if they are faulty too its odds on you have an earthing fault at the rear light cluster.
