    Vectra Dasboard Electrical Problems

My dad has a Vectra (BV52) but lately has started experiencing problems with the dashboard dispays. Fairly frequently the information on the dashboard will go off. The speedometer, rev counter fall to zero, miles indicator etc stop working, the indicators no longer click when used etc. Turning the engine on and off cures the problem temporarily. He took it one garage who replaced the alternator at a cost of about £160...which didn't fix it, then to a Vauxhall garage who replaced some component at a total cost of over £400, it was OK coming home from the garage, but the next time he drove it the problem returned. What could be causing this?

personally i'd go back to vauxhall and tell them to look again, and not charge me this time... you've obviously just paid them £400 to replace something which didnt need replacing.

    Vectra - dash display/gauges etc

I bought my Vectra new in early September. When I went to start it this morning (26th Oct) I found that the door warning light was on (despite all doors being properly closed) and the dashboard display lights were not working. None of the dials - speedo, rev counter, petrol, temperature gauge would work. Indicators worked externally but warning lights on dash display did not.
My supplying dealer Arnold Clark - Northwich could not help until Monday but suggested I contact Arnold Clark, Winsford. Service Manager there explained that the display had gone into 'sleep mode'. He asked whether I'd left the car unused for a day or two - as it happens I'd used it only yesterday and everything had been fine. He reckoned it was not a fault as such. More a peculiarity I suppose?
The way to get the car out of sleep mode' is to depress the brake pedal and hold in the tripmeter button at the same time. (!!!!???)
I said that I'd not come across that in the manual (I checked on returning home and can find no mention of it). It all seems very odd but the good thing was that it must have worked.and the car is now back to normal. Obviously, if the problem recurrs on a regular basis I will be back to the dealer straight away.
I hope this information is of some use to somebody out there. I cannot really understand why customers do not have their attention drawn to this odd quirk of the vehicle,; certainly there should be some clear information in the handbook about it.

Hope this is of some help

I thought pressing brake pedal and holding mileage reset was to reset the service display. Maybe this also resets the whole panel? Check your service interval displays and see if its reset to 12k(?) or something.

there is a control panel within the fusebox that causes allsorts of electrical grelims. you have to remove the top row of relays and iirc its a green clip in the middle of the fuses that has to be pulled out and then it slides out from the drivers door side of the fuse box
