    Hello fellow vauxhall owners.

I am new to this but could do with any help. this is driving me crazy!

i have a vauxhall astra (5 door hatchback) 1.6 that is manufatcured in 99 (t reg).

Last summer my immobiliser (i think, as i dont have an alarm) just kept randomly going off for no reason! this incudes the horn/siren (so loud) and the indicator lights. i noticed that on cloudy or rainy days, the car was absolutely fine, but as soon as the sun shines the stupid immobiliser goes off! i felt it was definetely a heat thing. so i went to vauxhall and they did a diagnostic test and came up with no problems but they said the siren probably needs a changing (very expensive). not a 100% that was the problem, i said no to the change and prayed that it would go away.

all winter, car was absolutely fine, nothing at all! then suddenly bank holiday monday (very hot and the sun is out) and the car is back to its old self. its gone off 4 times in the space of 30 mins!

when i leave one of the doors open, its fine again, no noise at all! but i dont want to do this all summer!

does anyone have an idea whether its the siren or the power sounder (info off some other forum)? or is there anyway i could disable the immobiliser? changing the siren is gona cost like £175!

    please help!anyone!

    it is very much appreciated!

p.s sory for the long explanation

it sounds like the power sounder is the problem , i seem to remember a thread on here somewhere about changing the batteries in the power sounder.
if your car has a power sounder then it does have an alarm .

iirc the power sounder is behind the n/s/f wheel arch liner .

If it's making a noise, then it's got an alarm.

    hello mate,

would it make a difference if i locked my doors using the key rather than the fob? would this disable the alarm? i dont think it would, but just need confirmation from an expert!

in regard to the power sounder, "the power sounder is behind the n/s/f wheel arch liner", are there any steps to remove this? is it a difficult job and what exactly does it look like? also what does n/s/f mean? sory

will the alarm continue to go off if i completely take the power sounder out?

soory again for silly questions but appreciate all the help

    thanks guys:D

    n/s/f = near side front.

Alarm will still be set when locking the car with the key in the door lock.

Disconnecting the power sounder will invalidate your insurance (unless you tell them) as your car will no longer have a Thatcham approved alarm fitted.

Details of where the power sounder is can be found HERE

Scroll down and click on "'How To'..... Replace the Power Sounder" (In The Wheel Arches section)

Replacement rechargable batteries are getting harder to obtain, by the way.

    hello dave!

thanks for the info, will try it out at home!

just got the below info off another thread - could this be true???

"my alarm did that when it was hot, I took it to a vauxhall dealership and he said that when the sun heats up the bonnet the metal rises, causing the bonnet switch to depress so the alarm thinks the bonnet is open. Seeing that midday the sun is at it's hottest it may be that.

Or it could be that the power sounder is on it's way out or the batteries need replacing. Does it bleep when you turn the ignition key?"

this seems to relate to me more, i think it could be a weather issue. could the heat effect the power sounder aswell??? considering all winter no issues at all and now the summer and the problem arrises?

just checked my LED on the hazard warning lights. when i lock all the doors using my remote, the LED continously flashes for around 15 seconds and then the LED flashes once every 2 seconds afterwards.

is this normal or could there be a fault?

    thanks [IMG]

Just had to replace power sounder on a Zafira. Had similar problems i.e would go off when car got warm. Sounder Aprox £65 from main dealer. Opened up old sounder and found batteries are Varta 3/v 150H. Appears you can still get them for around 9.99. Make sure you get the ones for attaching to a PCB. The "how to change a power sounder" is very good. Followed instructions with no problems

The flashing LED for 15 seconds is indicating a fault with the alarm. Now that could be something as simple as a door/bonnet/boot left open or something more serious. As the light is flashing you *should* be able to get the fault code read out to diagnose what's wrong.
