    hi all
i have owned my 2012 Antara 2.2 cdti 4x4 for just under a year now and generally things havnt been too bad apart from the constant having to re-gen the dpf filter and the terrible fuel economy nothing like the dealers say it will do this was all good right up till the point of the transfer box deciding it didnt want to stay in one piece (it now has a hole in it/no oil /and the gears are as much use as a chocolate fireguard)
i have been on several websites forums etc and apparently this is a common problem mine has failed after only 60,000 miles and i have heard stories af these failing after only 33,000 miles which i find rather alarming luckily i was driving really slow when this happened and luckily not on the motorway i thought that this should be a simple fix just get a new one or a decent second hand one mmmm this is where it gets interesting second hand ones are as rare as hens teeth so i thought lets get a quote from vauxhall well after getting up off the floor as the price was HORRENDOUS £3435.00 plus the vat =4122.00 on a part that should not fail at these kinds of milages and that is supply only so fitting will add another few hundred to the bill and Vauxhall are not in the least bit interested so at this point i am seriously considering leaving the antara for someone to steal as i have owned and driven vauxhalls for the last 30 years(from viva,s and cavaliers right through to the carlton omega and vectra) and never had a major issue but vauxhall seem to want nothing to do with the Antara i may give it one more try with an Insignia but this has seeriously put me of of buying another Vauxhall so beware of these transfer boxes it will hit you REALLY hard in the pocket if it fails

I've just had this issue at 36000 miles, 11 months out of warranty but with full service history. Took it to vx dealer who diagnosed and submitted a claim to vx. They paid 90% and dealer paid remaining 10% of the £10100 bill to replace the transfer box, propshaft, and rear differential. Took 5 weeks but well worth the stress. Other option is mackies in scotland can get a new one for you for about £2300 if I recall correctly - I called around to get mine repaired but there are no serviceable parts available. Although if your casing is bust there is no way to repair. If replacing then check your uj on the prop to make sure it's ok first. Hope this helps.

Yeah, that's what I thought when they said they wouldn't cover it, but it worked out in the end with the help of vx customer service. I only bought it 3 months prior and the supplying dealer refused any assistance

just a quick update on my post
having now ordered the transfer box from mackie transmissions in scotland £1990.00 plus vat a lot cheaper than vauxhall who quoted me £3,365 plus the vat comes in at £4.038 so i would recomend them if you need one
it takes 2 weeks shipping from korea(where the car was made) and is a brand new box
on the up side i took the car to my sons garage and after placing on the ramp we removed and dismantled the transfer box
after inspection we found the layshaft bearings had destroyed themselves and worn a small hole in the casing
after some deliberation we found that by having the casing repaired and removing the layshaft and cleaning and re-assembly the car is now front wheel drive only and drives fine this will be ok till the new box arrives and is in all fairness quieter and better on fuel and seemsa lot quicker off the line and at least i have the car to drive around in
i have towed a caravan with it in this configuration and it drives and pulls great
i know that vauxhall did a front wheel drive only version and in some ways i wish i had gone for that option instead of the 4x4
we are seriously looking at pricing up the conversion to 2 wheel drive as an option at his garage for antara owners and will be posting this at a later date for anyone interested
the only factor would be the damage to the transfer box casing and if we can get that repaired mine was relatively light damage and was an easy fix
    will post again soon
    Dave
