Rubber still degrades. Hence the 4 yr recommendation instead of 40,000 miles.

The fault line was introduced in 1979 (Kadett D) on the 13S engine, The rocker was amended in 1991 but with the same basic stress break(some engineering reason or other), and that same rocker is still used on all OHC 8v engines today (not bad for a 28 year olddesign). The engines with this technology are:-

    Delbert,
Whether you agree or not, just stating Vauxhalls current policy on timing belt change intervals.

I'm even more confused now. Am I correct in interpreting from the above that my Astra with engine type Z16SE doesn't now need a belt change until 8 years or 80,000 miles?

Especially so, since I was contemplating a belt change in the coming months!

So ALL the Family I/II single OHC engines produced since 1979 should have failed safely BUT 50% didn't.

I was intimately involved with Vauxhalls as high mileage company lease cars in the 80s and 90s, so I know how many Astra mk1/2 and Cavalier mk2/3 had to have expensive engine rebuilds after cambelt failure - about half.

The theory of the rocker arms shearing to prevent serious damage is just that, a theory, that isn't born out by practice.

Checking www.vauxhall.co.uk I can find no reference to cambelt change intervals.

    Hi again Ruperts Trooper,
Vauxhall (best practice), recommended cambelt change intervals for all petrol engines (97-02), every 4 years or 40,000 miles. Vauxhall introduced this recommendation in late 2001, if you'd like clarification of this, please ring Vauxhall's direct customer service number 0845 0902044.

I don't need clarification, I know it's 40,000 miles or 4 years, but others are trying to disprove this.

Sorry, Boroboy, that sounds ungrateful for your input - I'm not, I am very grateful, thank you.

I have been involved with motor cars for the last 29 years including VX, everyone gets paranoid about the belt when in reality the belt never goes (unless it's been contaminated by a faulty oil pump seal), it's always the associated bits and bobs which make them fail(which you have quite rightly pointed out on many of our previous debates).

In honesty in all that time i have only ever seen 2 cases of damaged valves(never the guides like 16v) and when the drivers were questioned(if thats the right choice of words) in both cases it's because they were travelling at 100+ or over 5000 rpm, so in these instances there is a "potential" to damage further, at one period we were seeing 5-6 per month and in all cases (theory or not) we always got away with a belt and rockers.

Perhaps you experenced the lease companies being fleeced whilst serving your time with them who knows?. But, i am only passing on my personal experence with these engine family.
