Can someone help - What's the relation between these models, I know the Carlton is referred to as the Omega A, but where do these models stand in geneological terms. I'm trying to work out a history of the Omega (UK and abroad), so if anyone has any links or offical information I would be grateful.

Cheers
Dave

Carlton as u state is the Omega A (Opel Omega on the continent) came in 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 diesel (i think) and 3.0 gsi 24v or 12v.

The Senator (whilst sharing the same 3.0 24v engine as the carlton gsi's) is the more toyed up version, air con, cc, leather etc. Main difference exterior wise is a toothy grin of a front grill :)boff: imo) and rear arches (looks nicer than gsi rears).

The Omega is the carlton and senator's successor.

And don't forget that little old 3.6 straight six 24V twin turbo Carlton that we would all love to own, the Lotus Carlton.

If I remember correctly the Carlton (and the last model was in its 3rd version) came in 1.8 carb(18SV), 1.8 injection(18SEH), 2.0 injection (20SE), 2.3TD (23DTR), 2.6 petrol straight six (C26NE), 3.0 straight six 12 valve (C30NE and C30SE), 3.0 straight six 24 valve (C30XEI) and 3.6 straight six 24 valve twin turbo (C36GET).

Before that you start getting into the old cam in head engines and the like.

Out of interest the C in the at the start of the engine number generaly indicates the presence of a cat, the next two digits are the CC i.e. 20 is 2.0 litre.

The next digit is the compression ratio,

G < 8.5:1
L 8.5-9.0:1
N 9.0-9.5:1
S 9.5-10:1
X 10-11.5:1
Y > 11.5:1

Next digit is the mixture system i.e.

E = Injection
Z = Central fuel injection (i.e. single point)
V = Carburetor
D = Diesel

Final digit is a version type and there are loads of these

Got to say, liked the Carlton, bomb reliable and used to do intergalactic mileage (there were 2 Taxis in Melton Mowbray that hit 300K miles on original engine and box that the old man used to service). The senator was very good, much bigger, they did a piece on Top Gear once on them as a second hand car and scored them very highly, needless to say the dealers put a grand on the screen prices as a result!

Again the last Senator was the Mk2. This had 2.5 straight six cam in head engine, 3.0 12V straight six, 3.0 24V straight six. The 2.5 was later replaced by the 2.6 cam in head engine.

Just goes to show that those summers spent valeting cars at the local dealers whilst I was a student wern't wasted.....totaly..!

The 3.0 24V was the C30SE... 12valve engines were NE.

And Irmscher kitted Senators look gorgeous (as do Lotus kitted Senators ;) )
3.0 24v is C30SE as Evil says but the Carlton Diamond estate was fitted with a restricted 24v engine coded C30SEJ

12 vlavle engines before cats were 30NE and after cats C30NE. C30XEI is the Irmscher modified engine fitted to the Omega Evo 500, also a C40XEI.
