    Hi All

I have just become the proud owner of a 02 Vectra 2.0Dti. It's the older shape vectra, which I guess makes it a Vectra B?

Anyway, got the car home Ok, but found the steering getting tougher all the way home. On inspection, the PAS fluid was pouring our the gaiter on the passenger side. I take it this means the rack is kaput?!

Also - is this a common problem? It seems a lot of post suggest it is?

Anyway - my main question is what sort of price am I expecting for a rack? I've been quoted around £100+vat, which pleased me a little, as I was think closer to £200.

Also, in terms of fitting, I have been told it's a drop-bed excercise?

    Thanks for your help all
    Dave

I asked at my local garage a couple of years ago when I thought I had a problem with the steering rack and was told it was to be hundreds of pounds .The subframe has to be lowered to get at it :(
It's been OK and still goes through the MOT so ,I haven't thought anymore about it . Not sure if this is something you could tackle your self . Maybe someone can tell you here what is involved .

hi, i bought a '00 diesel a few months ago and had the same problem. my dad wanted to take the engine out to do the rack - i just ended up dropping the subframe... and the exhaust and engine mounts - tbh im sorry i didnt just lift the engine out of it. its not a difficult job - just a pain in the ass - beware of the replacement rack but - i ended up having to take the steering wheel off to get it back centred again - i think i paid 50yoyos for the rack?

    Thanks for the help all!

I'm getting someone else to do the hard work on Monday - but I'm just wondering, what happens if I drive it like this, with all the fluid leaking out? I know there's the obvious lack of quality steering, but can this cause long term damage?

it could end up damaging the power steering pump as its the fluid going through it that lubricates it.
