there is no lift pump as such on the 2.2, the injector draws the fuel up from the tank, when you have run out of fuel you need to fit a priming pump to the fuel filter to draw the fuel back up the line, or but this could cause damage to your pump because it could be lacking fuel to lubrocate it, turn the engine over for at least a minute then a short rest then another minute, or tow start it if its manual gearbox,

sprinter vans say to turn the engine over for 95 seconds after they have ran out, thats a long time on a starter motor,

now there could be another problem and that is the leak off pipe/spill pipes may be pinholed, if you think you did not run out of fuel this might be the problem, cheep fix and they go quite often, im sure that in the forum section there will be a page or 2 about them.

Where is this bolt? In reply to your question about filling the diesel filter with fuel just remove the lid from the filter housing(one small torx screw holding it in place) make sure it is full of diesel and replace the lid. Doing this makes it easier for the pump to get fuel to the injectors and makes for less cranking with the starter motor.

The injectors will bleed themselves, you have to make the process easier for the fuel pump by priming your dry/empty fuel system by prefilling the filter to help the fuel pump to purge the system of air,if you use the pump on it`s own it could damage your pump through no fuel as this also lubricates the pump or starter motor due to excessive winding over so fill up the filter as rapala said and either tow start or charge battery and use the starter
