Just replaced burnt out starter motor on my sons car and everthing seems to be fine. Have read that the fault could have been a faulty ignition switch so i bought a replacement to fit.. I spent about an hour trying to separate the switch from the rear of the barrel but no joy by squeezing any bits i thought held it in place so put it all back together before i broke something.. I am now thinking maybe the Barrel has to be removed first before the switch can be taken off.

Can anyone point me to a How to guide, of give me some advise on what i need to do. i have searched the forums and was unable to find the infomation

    Many Thanks

There should be a little grub screw holding the switch to the barrel, cant remember if it is the front facing you or at the rear.

Did you manage to change the ignition switch?

I am planning on changing the starter motor, ignition switch and EGR valve on my 2002 Astra 1.6.

I'm OK with the starter motor and EGR Valve, but am unsure as to how to change the ignition switch. Haynes guide suggests I'd need to remove the steering wheel, is that right?

If you wouldn't mind bullet pointing a bit of an 'idiots guide to changing an ignition switch' I would really, really appreciate it!

    Thanks,

    Adam

I have not got around to doing it yet.. but you dont have to take the wheel off.. what i have found out is that you do have to to remove the barrel before you can get the switch off. Remove the cowling, remove the wiper stalk. put key into ignition and put to position i or ii. there is apparently a hole in the top of the column that is revelead when you have removed the wiper stalk. you push something down the hole and then the barrel will be released. then apparently you can take the switch of from the other end..If i am wrong i appologise but that is now what i am expecting to have to do when i have the time.. Something i have learnt from my research is never put wd40 into the barrel to try and free it at all as this will work like a cleaner rather than a lube and although may seem better at first will long term ruin it.. Best to use Grapite powder.. available from fleabay for about £3 or sharpen lots of pencils

if anyone else can correct me i would be more than welcome
