obviously we are all used to the whining noise that the gearbox makes whne you reverse quickly, but mine has started to make that noise while going forwards now.
the whining rises and falls with the engine revs, but only when accelerating, and currently only in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. when just cruising along in a gear it is not audible.
there is no noticable difference when going round corners or anything.

should i be expecting a large bill? is there anything i can do to check / rectify any simple problems?

    thanks,

    derek.

Hi, my '03 Astra has had that noise in 1st gear in drive since new. It's not loud and has not got any worse. I was told it was normal for that 'box. Chrisshu (Sorry, i have an auto, should have read more closely!)

Normally if the noise is in the first three gears the layshaft bearings or input shaft bearings have had it. In fourth and fifth the drive is straight through the box.

Hi, In my earlier reply, I took it as an auto(I know!). Anyway with a manual, it could be front or back bearings, worn main shaft, or lay shaft bearings. The front/back bearings are a rattleing sound, while the others are a distinct whine. If the surface hardening is worn off the gears they will whine too. Reverse whines because they are straight-cut gears. With the noise in the lower gears, it's probably the input shaft/layshaft bearings.Chrisshu

should i be worried about a sudden imminent catastrophic failure or will it gradually get worse before totally failing? it has only been doing it for a few days.
