I have a Vauxhall Astra Convertible this morning when I turned it on, the exhaust emissions light came on, will it be ok to drive? Does anyone know the reason why this had happened? X

Need some more info on the car, but there could be many reasons on why the warning lamp came on. Do a search for the paperclip trick and the pedal test. Depending on what year/sytem is on your car one of them may work.

Ok try this press the brake pedal and throttle pedal down and hold them, turn the ignition on DO NOT start the engine. The EML (engine management lamp should now start to flash) Carefully count the flashes, they will appear in groups of 4. For example 10 flashes, 1 flash, 4 flashes, 10 flashes. There will be a small break then it will flash again. Keeps counting untill it appears to just flash without a break. This will translate to a 4 digit code for example the one I explained translates to 0140 which means Oxygen sensor 2 no activity detected. Make sure you get the codes counted correctly as 1 wrong digit will lead you down the garden path. If in doubt start again. Post the codes and someone will help.

Yes it should be fine to drive the car, as you didnt mention any poor running etc and that is the time to start worrying. I was going to suggest an assistant to count, I know from experience how easy it is to miss a flash or to get really confused. And by flash I was meaning the little orange light, not my neighbour.... Oooops LOL

It's cleared itself and won't give us the flashing code. The light is off. X

Does the light flash at all? It should flash constantly if there is no codes. Watch for the flashing spanner light

Hmm I bet your system doesnt have diagnostic display enabled. This is rare but I have seen this a few times. I would say IF, you know a garage or someone with a half decent diagnostic system, ask them to plug it in and just do a check. There may be someone from this forum that lives close to you, and has an OPCOM or better, that will have a look for you. With winter upon us, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
