Hia all sorry to ask for help on my first post before a introduction but ile introduce myself later,my astra van 04 1.7cdti smokes badly on or over 3000 revs, and i mean bad black smoke, its had another egr unit complete which didnt smoke on the donor car,and with the egr pipe blocked off to the exhaust manifold the car doesnt smoke.

Now obviously it throws the eml on,and ive just left it blocked and it runs ok just the eml bugs me so ive had another go at it,ive checked for splits in pipes, replaced the egr[the cast housing] and replaced the egr solenoid itself[two seperate bits on the 1.7cdti.

Also i tried blocking the breather from the rockercover to the air inlet pipe[at the air pipe not the cover]
just to try and eliminate it smoking,i thought it was drawing oil into the egr and through the turbo, but no diffrence.

Now ive put it all back to normal cleared the egr fault[eml light on]and she still smokes ive been told the inlet manifold could be the problem some flaps stuck or something letting the oil through its gota be oil thats causing the smoke, dont know what else to try so thought ide ask here for help.

The cars been well serviced regularly with gm longlife oil and filters, ive even had the injectors tested and new seals fitted so whys it smoking and am i right thinking its the inlet manifold, and why doesnt it smoke when the egr pipe is blocked off.

hi there i wouldnt worry too much black smoke indicates a lack of air or too much fuel being injected,if it was a oil problem it would be blue or white smoke.I am not sure what the problem is at the moment but has it been serviced recently,I.E air filter/timing belt.If so check them.

All checked and ok or replaced it smoked when i bought it and ive serviced and belted it since with no diffrence unless you blank the egr pipe off then no smoke and no smoke under 3000 but boot it up a hill say and its realy bad,so why no smoke when egr blocked off, cheers for the reply paul.
